The unprecedented shooting was strongly denounced as racist and inhumane by Greece's government, political parties and society.

The government pledged to investigate working conditions of migrants in the area who claimed that several of about 5,000 people do not have residence permits and are working without insurance for low salaries in difficult conditions, without protesting for fear of deportation.
