Digital Life
It was at that point in time that i knew this was a different kind of game. I've since played through it at least half a dozen or more times and everytime that camera pans out across Hyrule field it still gives me the same feeling.
Hmmm . . . . now my favourite WTF moment, this one is a little bit harder to think about. But i think it would have to be a feature in a game rather then a moment. The insanity effects from Eternal Darkness.
I remember once being home alone and playing it on my parents big screen with all the lights in the house off for added ambience, suddenly the volume on the tv started reducing itself and i thought it was real. Freaked the hell out of me because i thought someone else was in the house with the remote.
A short time later the screen went black as if the tv had turned itself off, i actually fell to the floor!
Ragnaros in World of Warcraft. Molten Core was excruciating, but seeing the gigantic Firelord emerge from his pool for the first time was jaw dropping. Seeing him the first thing that popped into my head was "We're supposed to kill THAT!?"
The Collosus in God of War II. Talk about a game hitting the ground running! Most of the first level is an epic running battle against this opponent. This fight is something every gamer should experience, its THAT good.
Psycho Mantis in Metal Gear Solid. Because if you're gonna break the fourth wall, you may as well do it with style. And this had more style than anything before it in the series, in the game, or anything afterwards in MGS. In my opinion, its the one moment of true van cleef and arpels engagement ring copy genius Kojima has had.
Welcome to the World in Fallout 3. Seriously, stepping outside the vault, and seeing the Capital Waste for the first time is incredible. The final van cleef between the finger ring copy act of this game is where it finally leaves behind the crude black cat scares that plagued the rest of the game, blurs the visions and reality completely, and actually becomes scary. That, and the pace moves past top gear to absolute, breakneck, out of control madness.
I pluged in Halo for 5mins and then took it out again, I had never heard the Halo hype at that time and didn't realise it was a cool game, and because the first part of the game you are on a ship I just found my self running around corridors for the first 2mins and got impatient.
Other OMG moments. I kept myself shidled from the leaks about Assassin's Creed and about how you come to be in ancient times, so when I put the game in, OMG!
The end of Half Life. The G Man summed it up so neatly, "quite the anticlimax after what you've survived". I was left sitting there going "what the hell just happened!?"
Final Fantasy X 2. The whole thing. Could they have tried to make it a more cynical cash in on the fanboy love for Rikku and Yuna?
And now, the grand daddy of all WTF moments.
The removal of the mask at the start of Metal Gear Solid 2. And more importantly, this is Metal Gear SOLID. His name is right there in the goddamn title!
System Shock 2 Realising that SHODAN is altering reality to the extent that she is recreating Citadel Station from the original game, complete with the original boxy graphics.
God of War This whole series is full of gobsmacking moments, but probably my favourite is in the final fight with Ares, when Kratos has been disarmed. and you pick up van cleef & arpels ring price copy the giant statue's sword, that you crossed over as a bridge repeatedly earlier in the game. So you're playing boss fight, trying to save the sword, while catching glimpses of the previous game's boss fight in the background. OMG and WTF rolled into one. Sheer f king genius.
Half Life The moment of the actual "Black Mesa Incident", when Gordon is teleported from the test chamber, to Xen, surrounded by Bullsquids, back to the test chamber, into a dark room full of Vortigaunts. and finally back to the test chamber. Again, OMG and WTF rolled into one. About halfway through the game, coming out of that pipe onto the cliff face is a fantastic OMG moment too.
I'm sure I'll think of more later.
Having played both GTA 1 2 to death, to suddenly see the world in 3D was without a doubt THE most mind blowing gaming moment I can ever remember. The drive in the rain after escaping the prison van was absolutely gorgeous.
More recently Call of Duty 4, at the very beginning of the "Ghillies in the Mist" level. The moment you see your buddy move in the grass and you realise what the level is all about.
WTF moments? Dead Rising, trying to read the mission text without an HD TV. Ridiculous, unforgivable.
Any time a 360 game has some ridiculous on line multi player achievements, when it is quite clear from playing the multiplayer that it absolutely sucks. Do some focus testing before you set the achievements and release the game so people can tell you what you have done sucks completely and no one will play it.
