A book about two men, one in his 50s and the other in his 20s, taking a 7,000-kilometer journey on kick scooters was recently published.

A Journey of Love and Loneliness tells the story of their journey across the country, from north to south. But the two men are not your typical travel buffs. The younger man has autism, and the epic trip was their way of raising awareness about the condition.

The story really began, however, seven years ago when Dou Yixin, a successful businessman in Beijing learned about autism from a friend who wanted to set up a rehabilitation center for children who suffered from it.

Dou had never before heard of the incurable neuro-disorder, which impairs the sufferers' ability to interact socially and to communicate properly. People with autism can have trouble integrating into society and maintaining relationships. Most patients will suffer extreme loneliness throughout their lives.

"After spending some time with autistic children I realized that they badly need attention from society, but public awareness is poor," says Dou.

The businessman started to devote himself to building a rehabilitation center.

From 2008 to 2012, Dou and his friend took in about 100 children with autism and spent more than 4 million yuan ($650,000). "Most families who send their children to us are already very poor, so we charge nothing," Dou tells China Daily.

In the center's fourth year they ran out of money and had no choice but to close the doors.

"Originally, I planned to make a cross-country journey to do some final fundraising for the children," says Dou. "Like a farewell tour."

When the mother of an autistic man, Chen Meng, learned about Dou's plan, she asked the businessman to take Chen along on the trip.

"I initially agreed, thinking they were joking but it turned out they were serious. I was a little bit worried," says Dou. "However, we decided to give it a try."

Dou says that it is difficult to tell if someone is autistic simply by looking at them, so when they behave childishly or unusually, they are often misunderstood and criticized.

"If more people start to understand autism and are therefore patient and understanding of the abnormal behavior of people with autism, it will be helpful for their rehabilitation," says Dou.

On Aug 24, 2012, Dou and Chen set off from Mohe, the country's northernmost county in Heilongjiang province, and traveled all the way down to Sanya on Hainan Island－the southernmost city of China.

In every major city, they partnered with local charity organizations to launch fundraising initiatives and reached out to the community to talk to them about autism.

Dou talks about the trip in a relaxed voice, but it was no easy task. In addition to dealing with difficulties such as storms, heat and water shortages, Dou also had to take care of Chen, whose autism can lead to dramatic mood swings.

Dou encouraged Chen to communicate with people they met on the road as a way to push him to interact with others.

The book chronicles their adventures day by day through the dairies of both the men. Chen's diaries are mostly descriptive and Dou writes more about the growth of Chen and his feelings.

"Many people ask me why I like children with autism," says Chen. "Because they are innocent and pure. No matter how you treat them, they always treat you with kindness.
