JAMES Harden isn’t necessarily known for his speed. That said, he felt extremely fast on his coast-to-coast drive in the fading seconds on Monday night.
“I was running so fast,” Harden said. “I felt like I was Usain Bolt.”
Harden drove the length of the floor for a layup with 2.4 seconds left to lift the Houston Rockets over the Denver Nuggets 125-124.
Harden had 39 points, 11 assists and was three rebounds shy of his 20th triple-double of the season. Houston outlasted Denver in a duel between the second- and third-highest scoring teams in the NBA.
“The second half just became a shootout at the O.K. Corral — who’s going to score more points?” Nuggets coach Mike Malone said.
“I hate those kind of games because when you’re playing against the third seed in the Western Conference on their home floor and you’re turning the ball over, you’re going to have a hard time keeping pace with them. But we did that and gave ourselves a chance.”
Harden likely saved the game for Houston, too, when he batted down an inbound pass to Mason Plumlee near the basket following his layup.
“We were trying to get the lob, and I thought it was a good play call,” Plumlee said. “We just didn’t convert it.”
Will Barton gave Denver a one-point lead on a three-point play with less than a minute left. On the following possession, Harden missed a layup, but he got it back on the other end of the floor when he rebounded Jameer Nelson’s air-ball.
Harden took the ball down the court and scored on a finger-roll layup.
In Oklahoma City, Klay Thompson scored 34 points to help the Golden State Warriors beat the Thunder 111-95 in a heated matchup filled with trash talking, physical play and technical fouls.
Stephen Curry exchanged shoves with Oklahoma City’s Semaj Christon just before halftime, and both were issued technical fouls. Oklahoma City’s Russell Westbrook and Golden State’s Draymond Green also got technical for their roles in the skirmish. The Warriors were overpowering in this one, leading by as many as 27 points while completing a sweep of the four-game season series.
Curry scored 23 points for the Warriors, who won their fourth straight and halted Oklahoma City’s win streak at five games.
Elsewhere, it was: Celtics 110, Wizards 102; Clippers 114, Knicks 105; Pacers 107, Jazz 100; Hornets 105, Hawks 90; and Magic 112, 76ers 109, OT.
USS Maine Explodes in Havana Harbo
In 1898, elites within the United States authorities falsely accused Spain of blowing up the usMaine with the intention to stoke the American folks right into a flag-waving frenzy that resulted in the Spanish-American War.
Dying of the Spanish Empire
The Spanish Empire was the primary truly international empire, reaching its territorial peak within the late 1700s.
As proof of Spain’s as soon as huge footprint, the Spanish language is still the third most spoken language in the world. (Even if you do not suppose you speak Spanish, you most likely know some Spanish phrases: Can you say tornado? Bonanza? Patio? Quesadilla? Enchilada? Taco grande supreme?)
However nothing lasts without end, and like every empire because the beginning of time (save the USA, which is still young…) Spain’s status because the world’s greatest energy was not to last.
By 1898, Spain was commonly losing territories. Though Spain nonetheless dominated Cuba, it, too, was becoming more and more exhausting to manage, and a minor revolution had broken out. This wasn’t welcome news to people in the United States who owned Cuban sugar, tobacco, and iron trade properties valued at over $50 million (which was a chunk of change in the 1890s!)
The mainstream media, then dominated by newspaper magnates Joseph Pulitzer and William Randolph Hearst, exaggerated–and outright fabricated–stories of horrible situations below Spanish rule.
Following the age-previous maxim, “If it bleeds, it leads,” the newspapers revealed stories about Spanish death camps, Spanish cannibalism, and inhumane torture. People ate it up and requested for more gravy.
So the newspapers sent extra reporters to Cuba.
After they bought there, however, the reporters discovered a distinct story. Artist and correspondent Frederick Remington even wrote back to Hearst, “There isn’t a war. Request to be recalled.” Hearst’s well-known reply: “Please remain. You furnish the images, I’ll furnish the war.”
And he did. His newspaper, frequently screaming how Spanish Cuba was going to hell in a handbasket, convinced large business pursuits in the U.S. to put pressure on anti-battle President William McKinley to protect their Cuban investments.
McKinley, in response, sent the usMaine battleship to Havana Harbor as a calming show of force.
Instead, the battleship exploded…
USS Maine Explodes in Havana Harbor
Three weeks after arriving, on the night of February 15, 1898, the usMaine exploded.
There are two theories for the explosion: Some believe the explosion was brought on by an exterior mine that detonated the ship’s ammunition magazines. Others say it was caused by a spontaneous coal bunker hearth that reached the ammunition magazines. Currently, the proof seems to favor the external mine theory.
One thing, however, is sort of certain: if the explosion was caused by a mine, it wasn’t planted by Spain.
However, the explosion killed 266 men. Without ready on an investigation,
America’s mainstream media blamed the tragedy on Spain and beat the drums for
war. By April, McKinley yielded to public strain and signed a congressional
decision declaring conflict
