The leadership council consists of one male representative and one female representative from each of the SECs 14 institutions.Earlier this year, the SEC?introduced new Student-Athlete Leadership Councils in the sports of?Football and Mens and Womens Basketball in which, in addition to the Conferences longstanding Student-Athlete Advisory Council (SAAC), provide student-athletes with additional opportunities to engage with campus leaders and Conference office staff. At the groups first meeting, the 28 student-athletes reviewed legislative items related to basketball and were educated on the NCAA governance structure. They also had a lengthy dialogue with SEC Commissioner Greg Sankey and listened to a presentation by TV analyst LaChina Robinson on best practices in social media.One of the goals of the meeting was to identify potential proposals that could be included in our legislative process, said Misty Brown, the SECs Director of Student-Athlete Engagement. It was impressive to see how excited the student-athletes were to learn about ways that they can influence the discussion on issues related to their sport. We received great feedback from the group. Our student-athletes have a voice, so it was important to be able to get feedback that we can use in both the conference and national conversations.The final three hours of the meeting consisted of breakout sessions. The womens representatives held discussions on diversity, time demands, career planning and mental wellness, while the mens representatives discussed transfer rules, summer league rules and other topics.I was honored to be a part of the leadership council, said Vanderbilts Marques Webb. It was a great idea and I think it will really help with college athletics. Getting the perspective of the student-athlete is so important and I think it will really help with legislation. I thought it was amazing to see so many young athletes come together for their sport and to make everything better overall. In addition, I think the meeting was well organized and was very successful, and I was so happy to be there with my fellow SEC members and am proud of the input we were able to give the SEC.The student-athletes were also divided into groups and participated in various role play scenarios. In addition, the group elected chairs for the council, which will be announced at a later date.The Mens Basketball Leadership Council and the Womens Basketball Leadership Council comprise two components of the SEC Student-Athlete Leadership Council.
