It seems my foray into the garden for dandelions was more dangerous than I first, or even, imagined.

According to a new study released by Apos Therapy four times as many people in Britain have been injured while gardening than while skiing. It seems as if 1 in 10 hurts themselves in the garden and 1 in 40 gets damaged on the slopes. Similarly, one in 20 people hurt themselves while making improvements to their homes, a lower injury rate than skiing.

Housework is more dangerous 鈥?statistically 鈥?than snowboarding, so if you were planning on dusting maybe put the mop down and phone a professional.

Is that mental or what?

Maybe because one tends to be a bit more careful on the pistes or perhaps one doesn鈥檛 warm up and stretch before heading out to the allotment, actually I don鈥檛 bother warm up before a ski, but I do generally walk down to the ski lift at Pre Chabert rather than take the shuttle bus.

I had even planned to start a small vegetable patch this year, a few carrots and some leeks, but now I鈥檓 not sure, I knackered my shoulder falling down the slopes of Serre Chevalier this season, I dread to think what I might pull in the inter-season.

Should you be tempted to 鈥済arden鈥?this year, take it easy as we want to see you back on the pistes safely next season 鈥?which is a scant eight months hence.

When a ski station closes and the snows begin to recede the locals do things you could hardly ken.

In Serre Chevalier, now that the snow is retreating, we have been hunting the dandelions that are poking up just on the very edge of the last snows.

The pistes still look fantastic, but I imagine they are as soup, the weird thing is the amount of snow still here, it comes all the way down to the bottom in Monetier and there is tonnes of the stuff all the way up the mountains, but the trees besides the pistes are now beginning to show their roots.

It is alien for me to eat dandelions, did it once as a kid and that was a bitter experience, to be honest I have even lost the excitement for blowing the clocks, so the idea of spending a couple of hours to collect what I would have considered the inedible was strange to say the least.

Apparently it is the effort of having to push through the snow cold earth that makes them taste sweet and indeed they do.

It is probably the need to find something to do in the inter-season that makes this hunt possible as it is quite labour intensive, but it doesn’t end there it’s almost longer to prepare them for the salad bowl as they need to be peeled and then washed.

Serve with a vinaigrette and finely chopped boiled eggs, delicious. This is considered to be one of the best “secret” recipes of the spring – and foreigners are considered quite mad for not making more of this king of the weed jungle.

If you are interested in visiting Serre Chevalier please do visit the site, it’s updated almost every day.

Serre Chevalier is a mountain resort and ski resort in The French Alps. Our site http:www.serrechevalier.org is a blog that has been updated every single day for three years.
