A secretary who is accused of stealing 4 million from her bosses at Goldman Sachs, the American investment bank, was motivated by "honest greed, not theft or deception", a court heard yesterday.
Joyti De Laurey, 35, said that she had been given permission by two of her bosses, Ron Beller and Scott Mead, gold plated cartier love bracelet to help herself to as much money as she wanted from their bank accounts.

Over the 14 month period that she is accused of taking money, she forged cheques and transferred money to bank accounts in Cyprus held in her maiden name.

"Moreover, her direct bosses were wealthy to the point that is really the stuff of fairy tales."

Mr Dein continued: "Mrs De Laurey stood between Mr Mead and the potential collapse of his marriage, his reputation, his job, even perhaps his millions.
"When she was a PA, he was a man, as she will describe, who outwardly portrayed himself as little short of a brilliant saint. Behind the scenes, though, she, his principal stage hand, knew different. She lied to his wife all the time, but on his instruction, for his benefit, with his encouragement. He lauded her for it; he thanked her for it and he rewarded her for it."
De Laurey said that Mr Beller told her to take money whenever she wanted from his account. She is accused of taking a total of 1.1 million from Mr Beller and his wife, Jennifer Moses, another Goldman Sachs executive.
Asked by Mr Dein what Mr Beller had said, she told the court: "That he would always look after me financially; what was his was mine; that I never had to worry about money concerns whilst I worked for him."
De Laurey said that she regularly forged Mr Beller's signature, both for money transfers and cheques that were paid into her bank accounts, and also for his own benefit, including cheques for his children's piano lessons and shopping trips in New York.
