Scurt periplu interbelic

Dimpotriv. Era vadul avocailor, medicilor, farmacitilor i negustorilor. Liniile 7 i 13 te lsau mai degrab pe ultimul segment al Cii Rahovei, dinspre Piaa Ferentari, pe cnd linia 16 te lsa pe segmentul cuprins ntre Splai i str. Sabinelor.

A great and free people together

After fake Cartier love yellow gold ring American rebels captured Montreal on Nov. 13, 1775 and besieged Quebec City in early December, only Guy Carleton heroic defence, complete with theatrical burning of the surrender demand, kept Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold forces from bringing all of the future Canada into the American Republic. What if they had succeeded?

Canadian nationalists portray the successful defence of Canada in the 1770s, and the War of 1812, as vital to the preservation of our unique culture and superior political system. Conservatives celebrate it as part of our glorious military history and superior political system. But had history turned out otherwise it need not have cartier wedding ring replica spelled disaster on either side of the border because this was no clash of civilizations.

Americans enjoyed liberty under law, as Canadians did and do. Americans and Britons were so similar in 1776 that Jefferson lamented in a draft of the Declaration of Independence that might have Cartier copy love ring been a great and free people together which, indeed, the Anglosphere largely was in the great conflicts of the 20th century. Even those Upper Canadians who rallied to the British flag in 1812 were, for the most part, American born non Loyalist immigrants whose ready sense of belonging north of the border testifies to our similarities not our differences.

Indeed, the ease with which Britons and Americans composed their differences after 1783, despite the kerfuffle from 1812 15, suggests a certain small mindedness on the part of most Canadians who insist loudly that we are enormously different and better than those wretched Americans with whom we trade, intermarry, travel and when necessary fight shoulder to shoulder.

Quebec nationalists might beg to differ, portraying the possibility of assimilation into the United States with particular horror. Yet they hardly rejoice at 250 years as a distinct part of an independent Canada despite George Etienne Cartier argument in 1864 that it was Quebecers great good fortune to be conquered by Britain before the French Revolution because owe the survival of our nationality to the free institutions that England has given us. State of Quebec probably would not have kept its language or civil law, or the religion now so unpopular among that province elite anyway. But America too had free institutions and those Quebecers who migrated to New England in the 19th century and early 20th, like their Louisiana cousins, became not an oppressed people but proud Americans.

It might suit the parochial taste of militant Canadian nationalists to stop with the Canadian perspective on the matter. But let us take a broader view. For if the world needs more Canada, as they so often insist, maybe the United States did too.

Suppose New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Upper and Lower Canada had joined the fledgling Republic, adding four more free states at the very outset. Perhaps in this alternate history the dreadful Institution of racial slavery could have been abolished peacefully there, as it Cartier ring replica was here, sparing Americans their bloody Civil War, the bitterness of Reconstruction and the legacy of racial oppression lingering well into the 20th century. Perhaps also the Atlantic and British orientation of our maritime provinces would have brought closer American engagement in world affairs in the late 19th century, possibly even to the extent of deterring Germany from launching the disastrous First World War.

To say so is not to lament the survival of Canada. The emergence of two great, free and friendly Anglosphere nations in North America is cause for celebration. But our enormous similarities make it plausible to imagine other happy outcomes in 1775.

December 1775 was no September 1940. Freedom or tyranny, culture or barbarism, simply did not hang in the balance. And this recognition might help us appreciate better, and understand better, what did happen and why.

After American rebels captured Montreal on Nov. 13, 1775 and besieged Quebec City in early December, only Guy Carleton heroic defence, complete with theatrical burning of the surrender demand, kept Richard Montgomery and Benedict Arnold forces from bringing all of the future Canada into the American Republic. Just a Pack of Predators

BERKELEY Huey P. Newton and Eldridge Cleaver may be dead, but the Black Panthers have never really gone away. This bunch of thugs continues to capture the imagination of American intellectuals. In the last couple of weeks, the group has been celebrated at a Wheelock College conference titled "The Black Panther Party in Historical Perspective" and on a National Public Radio program that considered the group's place in American life.

The conference in Boston was called, said one of its organizers, because "far too often in looking at the Panthers, people have relied on kind of a negative portrayal of the party." Some 40 new papers examining the Panther legacy were presented, but few of them dealt with the dark side of the Panther movement.

That's the side I know well, having documented and written about it since the late 1970s, along with a number of other journalists. Newton was a thug even before he co founded the organization with Bobby Seale in 1966. In 1964, he was convicted of assault after stabbing an unarmed man at a party with a steak knife. He bragged in his autobiography, "Revolutionary Suicide," of hanging out in hospital parking lots to pull off strong arm robberies.

Newton and the Panthers started out monitoring Oakland police to keep them from abusing ghetto blacks. They burst into the public consciousness in the wake of a police shootout in which an officer was killed. Newton was initially found guilty of involuntary manslaughter, but the conviction was later overturned.

By 1968, fault lines within the organization had developed. Newton and Cleaver had a falling out, and party chapters van cleef rose gold bracelet fake across the country divided into respective camps. Those on the Cleaver side were known for black nationalism and revolutionary violence. Those on Newton's side claimed to embrace his vision of social reform "pending the revolution," and they did establish a breakfast program and a Panther school. But at the same time, Newton was running the organization as an elaborate front for his criminal enterprises.

The party in Oakland operated a virtual vice ring out of Newton's favorite nighttime haunt, the Lamp Post bar. From its smoky recesses, the Panthers under Newton conducted a reign of terror, punishing rank and file females for even minor "infractions" by turning them out as prostitutes. Newton led an extortion racket against Oakland's bars, nightclubs, pimps and dope dealers, and his handpicked squad of collectors turned nasty whenever anyone failed to pay protection money. The Fox Oakland theater was torched two times in 1973, its owner told me, after the replica van cleef bracelet owner refused to hire a quota of Panthers and to pay for protection.

During the 1970s and early 1980s, a string of murders was believed by police investigators to have connections to the Panthers. A Berkeley nightclub owner turned up dead in his car at the San Francisco airport. Panther Fred Bennett was killed. Betty Van Patter, the Panthers' white bookkeeper, was murdered after being summoned to a meeting at the Lamp Post. Most of the crimes remain officially unsolved. Newton was, however, eventually charged with the murder of a 17 year old prostitute as well as other violent felonies. He fled to Cuba in the summer of 1974 after the prostitute's shooting, but by then he was already well known around Oakland for his cocaine fueled violent rampages. He was eventually acquitted of the murder, after what the district attorney termed "a planned assassination" attempt of the "most important witness" in the case.

There were, of course, many serious and dedicated Black Panthers around the country, people who had no idea that Newton operated a parallel organization devoted to crime. But Newton sometimes used their efforts to line his pockets and those of his fellow thugs. Early on, Panthers everywhere collected money for sickle cell anemia research. Newton later admitted that effort was a con, and that his organization siphoned off the money collected. Later, government and foundation grant money for social programs was similarly diverted, a fact exposed by an Oakland Tribune investigation.

The organization espoused a Marxist egalitarianism, but while its leader sipped Courvoisier in his penthouse, the rank and file were paid little, lived in cramped dormitories and worked up to 20 hours a fake van cleef and arpels bracelet day. Panthers who strayed from the party's rules were, in the early days, made to stand for hours in "mud holes" filled with cold water. In later times, they were beaten.

If the Wheelock conference wanted to examine the real legacy of the Panthers, its participants should have pored over the cold statistics showing a spike in drive by shooting deaths and gang warfare that took place in Oakland in the decade following the Panthers' demise. The Black Panther Party had so fetishized the gun as part of its mystique that young men in the ghetto felt incomplete without one.

    Mayonnaise to make at home

I don't make my own mayonnaise very often. When I do, it's usually in emergency situations when I need some for a recipe, ran out of the store bought kind and did not have the time or inclination to go out and buy more.

When I make that homemade mayonnaise, I'm reminded again that it's not that difficult. I also become mesmerized by the fact that at some point in time, someone decided that blending raw egg yolks and oil could lead to something so inviting. I also wonder why the heck they called it mayonnaise?

Although there are a few theories on how it got that name, in John Ayto's book, An A Z of Food Drink, he writes it's now generally accepted, based on the early spelling mahonnaise, that the term literally means "of Mahon." That book goes on to say the sauce was so named to commemorate the taking of Port Mahon on the Spanish Island of Minorca in 1756.

That invasion was led by the Duc de Richelieu, a title in the French nobility that at that time was held by Armand de Vignerot du Plessis. In An A Z of Food Drink it says it's presumed that his personal chef or even the duke himself created this sauce.

Why did they make it with egg yolks and oil?

Well, according to notes by Frenchman Grimod de la Reynire, a bon vivant who wrote a series of culinary almanacs from 1803 to 1812, it's believed those taking part in the attack on Port Mahon were so low in supplies that they were reduced to eggs and oil.

The Oxford Companion to Food says as a French word mayonnaise, which means, "the sauce," first replica van cleef bracelet appeared in print in 1806. That book also notes that the English borrowed the word and its first recorded use was in the 1840s.

The method for making mayonnaise likely hasn't change a whole lot since it was first made. Place egg yolks in a bowl, and then very slowly whisk in oil until a thick, emulsified sauce is created. Flavouring that mayonnaise is a bit of Dijon mustard and something acidic, such as white wine vinegar and/or lemon juice, salt and sometimes white pepper, depending on whose recipe you're using.

These days, of course, instead of making van cleef bracelet fake mayonnaise by hand, you can also whip it up in a food processor.

Most often, a more neutral tasting type of oil is used for mayonnaise, such as peanut oil, vegetable oil or regular olive oil. These oils will give it richness, but not add too strong a taste that overpowers and negatively affects the flavour of what you make with the mayonnaise.

That said, stronger tasting oils, such as extra virgin olive oil, can still be used to make mayonnaise. But it's usually only done when you want that flavour profile, such as when making garlic rich aioli with the mayonnaise.

In Marie Simmons' award winning book, The Good Egg, she writes there's a slight risk of bacterial growth from sauces such as mayonnaise made with raw egg yolks. But she says they can be minimized if you observe safe handling practices and precautions.

Simmons says to use the freshest eggs you can get for mayonnaise. They should also have ultra clean shells, be crack free and be kept refrigerated. After the mayonnaise is made, it should be kept refrigerated and used within two days.

Simmons adds that you should never serve a sauce made with raw eggs to someone who is elderly, very young, pregnant or has a weakened immune system. You know you're buying this type of Marmite because it will have both French and English on the label.

Use this homemade version of the famous French sauce for sandwiches, salads and dressings, or alongside fish, such as salmon.

Set a damp tea towel on a work and nestle your mixing bowl in it. (This will prevent the bowl from sliding around when you make the mayonnaise.)

Place egg yolks and mustard in the bowl and whisk until blended.

Using a 1/4 tsp measure, while whisking constantly, gradually dribble and mix in the oil. Once you've added about 1/4 of the oil this way, you can gradually begin to very slowly drizzle in the remaining oil in a narrow stream.

Adding all of the oil will take a few minutes, but it's OK to take a break if needed to rest your arm as long as the mayonnaise is holding together. Once all the oil is added, mix in the lemon juice (and/or vinegar) and salt. Transfer mayonnaise to tight sealing container, cover and refrigerate until needed. Use mayonnaise within two days.

Eric's options: To make mayonnaise in a food processor, place egg yolks and mustard in its bowl and pulse until completely blended. With the machine running, slowly add the oil in a thin and narrow stream until a thick, emulsified mixture is created. Flavour mayonnaise with lemon juice (and/or vinegar) and salt. knock off van cleef and arpels bracelets Store and use as described above. His latest is The Great Rotisserie Chicken Cookbook (Appetite by Random House). His columns appear in the Life section Wednesday and Sunday.

    London rains on Caprice's parade

Picture the scene. Two likely lads are planning an audacious robbery at the Cartier workshop on New Bond Street (and speaking in dodgy Cockney accents purely for comic effect)."Gotta be Thursday evening," says one.

"Stands to reason," he replies. "That's when they're switching on the Christmas lights. Just think of the crowds. While they're watching the ceremony, we go through the skylight, grab the gems, then have it away across the rooftops and nobody's any the wiser. Sweet as a nut. It's the perfect diversion."

"It's that Caprice," says the first blagger. "You know, the international supermodel. And according to the Daily Mail, the police have imitation Cartier Love Bracelet Screwdriver been warned to expect an exceptional turnout. "

"They're 'avin' a larf," his mate scoffs. "Who's gonna turn out for 'er? She's a post modern media construct whose career has consisted almost entirely of going to parties and openings in dresses made from the minimum of material. I mean, what does she actually do? Exceptional turnout, my arse."

The first blagger is pensive for a moment. "Yeah, I see what you mean," he says eventually. "But Christopher Biggins is doing the warm up . "

And so it was that on Wednesday night two armed robbers scampered with a sackload of gems under cover of darkness and on Thursday evening I reached the junction of Bond Street and Clifford Street 45 minutes before the scheduled arrival of Caprice, to find that the assembled press photographers, together with the children of the Sevenoaks School Choir, outnumbered members of the general public by about two to one.

A platform had been erected, with a catwalk along which Caprice would walk at the appointed time. This was no doubt intended to emphasise Caprice's status as an "international supermodel", although it's fair to say that Cindy, Naomi, Kate and their friends might be hard pressed to put a name to her cartier love bracelet gold with diamond replica face should they ever meet her.

Christopher Biggins was doing his best to stir up interest, giving regular updates between the choir's Christmas carols on the estimated time of arrival of the "gorgeous international supermodel". With exactly seven minutes to go, it became clear that Biggins had been spouting some bad medicine, since rain was starting to fall. By the time Caprice stepped from her car, we were in the middle of a torrential downpour. The crowd, which had by now swelled to roughly two hundred people, took shelter under umbrellas as she made her way along the catwalk in the glare of the photographers' flashes. She was wearing a fuchsia pink trouser suit and a black shirt open to reveal the kind of cleavage which could take your finger off if you weren't careful.

She was greeted by the large and amiable figure of Alan Lethbridge, national area manager of Russell Bromley and chairman of the Bond Street Association. He announced to the assembled throng that Caprice was the ideal person to turn on the lights because she represented "style, beauty, exquisite taste copy Cartier love bracelets 1:1 and international renown". It was now time for her to press the switch.

"OK, here we go," she said. "Ready? One, two . " The lights came on and everyone applauded.

And that was the limit of Caprice's public pronouncements, other than to observe to nobody in particular: "It's really, really raining now." Mr Lethbridge gallantly kept close and held an umbrella over her to protect her from the elements as the photographers formed a scrum in front of her. Then it was time for her to get back into her Mercedes for the 100 yard journey to Tiffany's, where a private party was to be held. "I can't believe it," said one of the photographers as he made his way off. "That fat guy just wouldn't get out of the way."

At Tiffany's, I ran into Richard Young, photographer of the stars, king of the snapperazzi. I asked him how Caprice scored in the celebrity league table and he said he rated her highly as a friend because she's a very nice person, but as far as her celebrity status goes, he couldn't really say. "She's very nice, but what does she do?" he said.

After having her picture taken a few more times and signing autographs for the boys in the choir, it was time for Caprice to leave. She had the Barnardo's Ball to attend. Me, I just grabbed a load of jewellery and legged it. Strangely, the rain outside had suddenly stopped.

HERE'S a little teaser. If you're standing on your bathroom scales and you lift one foot up, does the weight recorded by the machine (a) increase, (b) decrease, or (c) remain the same? The answer is (c), but if you thought that was easy and are feeling smug, perhaps we should try another. After you've taken the top off a bottle of lemonade and the bubbles have fizzed up, will the lemonade be (a) lighter, (b) heavier, or (c) the same? The answer is (a). From March next year, commuters in London will be able to ponder questions such as these as they undertake their daily Tube journeys. All of London Underground's 4,000 Tube carriages will carry a poster with a cartoon containing a scientific teaser in a project titled Science on the Underground.

The idea is the brainchild of Brenda Keogh and Stuart Naylor, who are both lecturers in science education at Manchester Metropolitan University. "I think a lot of people have got experience of science in their education," says Linda, "but what we've found is that to some extent it hasn't actually answered the questions that they have about the world around them." I know what she means. I've got O levels in chemistry and physics and I still can't work out what a Mandelson is for.

    Cricketers drive each other batty

ON WEDNESDAY the William Hill Sports Book of the Year Award (known to wags as the Bookie Prize) was awarded to Simon Hughes, a former cricketer for Middlesex and Durham who now writes for the Daily Telegraph. His book, A Lot of Hard Yakka, which details the life of a journeyman cricketer on the county circuit, is generally considered to be as hilarious as it is buy a fake Cartier love bracelet insightful about the ills of the modern game. Yet many of Hughes's cricketing colleagues may well have greeted the news of his victory with somewhat mixed feelings. This is bad enough, but I'm told that Selvey originally used the word "twat", which was then toned down by the magazine's editor.

Hughes was also involved in a feud with the Times's Michael Henderson for a while. Two years ago, Henderson was critical of Hughes's writing style on a radio discussion programme. "I gave him a few strokes and he didn't like it, so he let one of my car tyres down when I was at Trent Bridge, which I thought was pathetic. "I think he's improved, to be honest," he says. "When he first went into journalism he rubbed people up the wrong way because he was brash. He made no secret of the fact that he didn't particularly like the company of other cricket journalists." I wondered what Henderson thought of Hughes's book. "It's a very good book," he said. "He must have a bloody good editor, I tell you."

    Architecture? It's like poetry

"I KNEW from the age of 13 that I wanted to be an architect," says Michael Wilford. "It just somehow became a passion. My father was an engineer and thought that architecture was a very effete activity and so he did his best to prevent me from taking it up as a career."

Fortunately Mr Wilford Sr was unsuccessful, since last week Michael Wilford and Partners picked up the prestigious Stirling Prize for architecture. The award, administered by the Royal Institute of British Architects, was for Wilford's work on the Music School in Stutt gart. The judges described the building as "a classically inspired work of great power and subtlety that can be directly compared to the work of the inter war Scandinavian master Gunnar Asplund". As someone who knows nothing about architecture and has only seen the building in photographs, I would describe it as "a very nice building indeed, especially the round bit".

The awards ceremony on Thursday evening kicked off Architecture Week, a joint Arts Council and Riba initiative which aims to demystify architecture. Sadly, like me, most people don't know much about it. "I think there is a general lack of education about the built environment," says Wilford. "It seems extraordinary that people are taught literature and music and painting, all those kinds of things, but are very rarely taught about the built environment in which we all live and work."

Joe Walsh proves he's one of the guitar greats

To wit: Joe Walsh. While not technically a superstar, the Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and celebrated Eagles guitarist brings something special to the table on every song.

    Something very special, indeed.

Walsh who made his Victoria debut on Tuesday during an outdoor concert at Esquimalt's Bullen Park came out of the gate slow and steady, dropping his beach friendly hit, A Life of Illusion, one song into his set.

There was more where that came from, ranging from a cover of I Shall Be Released, which he dedicated to his late friend Levon Helm, to a soulful and rip roaringly good version of Turn to Stone. He makes music that is made for the shade a party friendly mixture of fist pumping rockers and gut busting novelty songs, some of which are tops in their respective genres.

He isn't all what he's made out to be, either. While he was funny ( spent a week up here one night, Walsh quipped, one of many subtle one liners tossed from the stage), he didn't rely on jokes for effect.

It wasn't necessary. Walsh's innate ability at coaxing magic from his stable of Fender and Gibson guitars is well told at this point see Rocky Mountain Way and Funk 49 and he hasn't lost a step over the years.

Ontario's Kim Mitchell opened the show with an hour long set of CanCon staples, from Rockland (a solid power ballad) to I Am a Wild Party (a beer soaked sing along).

He was a superb choice for an opening act, and though he had a few misses (Lager and Ale

didn't hit the high notes, but the effort was there), it was a treat to hear songs like All We Are, which was carried by his sweet singing bassist Peter Fredette.

The longtime sideman fake van cleef clover earrings also elevated Go for a Soda with his upper register, similar to the way Michael Anthony did for Van Halen back in the day.

It was a treat, albeit a subtle one.

Walsh got better as the night went along. During a version of Life in the Fast Lane, which he co wrote, Walsh sounded like a fierce player, a guitarist van cleef arpels earrings replica not to be messed with. He was great not just good with an instinctive van cleef & arpels necklace copy feel so rarely evident in modern day guitarists.

When he brought the night to a close with his signature song, Rocky Mountain Way talkbox and all it was a fitting cap to a solid, low key concert attended by 2,400 fans.

In fact, he makes magic with his guitar. The evidence is right there in the space between the notes and chords.
