Burr camphor lines the walls, "an incredibly rare Asian wood", says Kennedy. "This veneer is so beautifully figured, it looks like the amber room in the Summer Palace of Catherine the Great. It is composed of various tints of golden browns, bookmatched to look like butterflies and hearts. As I've just returned from a conference on wilderness conservation in South Africa, I should say this particular wood lay in a veneer shop in the East End for years. The tree died of natural causes. Honestly."
Voile curtains and engraved windows half obscure the bar from passers by on Piccadilly, leaving just an enticing glimpse. The bamboo veneer floor has been inset with wenge and maple. Carpets are based on 1920s Cartier cigarette boxes. Fake leopard skin covers the chairs.
On the walls hang mirrors (or verre glomis panels) engraved with leaping gazelles, inspired by similar mirrors that Jean Dunand designed for the bathroom of Jeanne Lanvin, the couturier. The colossal pillars on which the Ritz is propped have been lightened by embedding replica cartier love collection necklace Lalique glass panels carved with semi bas relief nudes, which Kennedy borrowed from the Orient Express of the mid 1920s. These panels high imitation cartier love necklace yellow gold are backlit with fibre optics. "The bulbs are in the basement," says Kennedy. "There's no need to dismantle the entire bar when one blows."
Kennedy famously gives good luxury. She has cornered the market in luxurious English country house design, a niche she has tweaked, plumped, titivated and exported abroad.
"My interiors, hopefully, will last forever and are fairly maintenance free," she says. Clients include George Harrison, Tomasz Starjewski, Claridge's hotel, the Ritz Club and the Aspinall family, whose casino she designed in Curzon Street.
Of course, this is also a bar for eating and drinking, not just nicking design ideas. There is a long list of classic and contemporary cocktails, Champagne cocktails, an all day bar menu, and no dress code, which means none of the pomp and circumstance of the rest of the Ritz. It's a lovely relaxing place in which to kick back with a degree of privacy that you don't get at the Ritz without first booking a room and calling for room service.
