Orlando nightclub shooting

A gunman opened fire at a gay nightclub in Orlando, Florida, killing at least 49 people and injuring dozens before being shot dead by police. What do we know about what happened?

How the incident unfoldedThe attack began at about 02:00 local time (06:00 GMT) on Sunday.

Pulse, which is one of the biggest nightclubs in Orlando, was holding a Latin themed event that was nearing its end when a man opened fire. There were more than 300 people inside at the time.

"He had an automatic rifle, so nobody stood a chance," said Jackie Smith, who saw two friends next to her get shot. "I just tried to get out of there."

At 02:09, the nightclub posted on its Facebook page: "Everyone get out of pulse and keep running."

The gunman, who was carrying an AR 15 type assault rifle and a handgun, exchanged fire near the entrance with a police officer who was working at the nightclub.

Additional officers arrived at the scene and a second gun battle ensued inside, forcing the gunman back. He took several people hostage in a bathroom at the back of the building, and told the police he had explosives.

At this Hermes Collier de Chien Bracelet replica point, police were able "to save and rescue dozens and dozens of people and get them out of the club," according to Orlando police chief John Mina.

With the gunman holed up in the bathroom, police secured the building and began preparing to breach the external wall of the bathroom with explosives.

FBI Special Agent Ron Hopper told reporters that Mateen had been interviewed by FBI officers twice in 2013 following inflammatory comments to colleagues asserting ties to the so called Islamic State group (IS).

The hermes bracelet sale replica investigation ended after officers were unable to substantiate the claims. However, Mateen was questioned again in 2014 about a potential connection to Moner Mohammad Abu Salha, an American known to have carried out a suicide bombing in Syria.

Mateen's ex wife, Sitora Yusufiy, said that he was violent and mentally unstable and had beaten her repeatedly while they were together.

It appears that he remarried after that divorce, and had a three year old son with his second wife, according to the Miami Herald.

Who was Omar Mateen?

Investigators are looking at whether his second wife, Noor Zahi Salman, knew about the plot ahead of time, and are considering charges.

She told the FBI her husband said he was going to see friends, though she thought he was going to carry out an attack at the night club, officials have told the US media.

There are also media reports that she said she was with him when he bought ammunition and a holster, and drove him to Pulse once to scope it out.

Media captionJim Van Horn, Pulse nightclub customer: "He (Omar Mateen) was a homosexual and he was trying to pick up men"

Mateen appears to have been a regular at the club and he contacted men on gay dating apps, raising the possibility that he was conflicted about being gay and lashed out.

What is internalised homophobia?

Was there an IS link? The group has said it was behind the attack, but the extent of its involvement is not clear.

An FBI spokesman said replica hermes mens bracelet Mateen phoned emergency services during the attack and pledged allegiance to IS.

The group had called for its supporters to launch attacks on the West during the Muslim holy month of Ramadan, that began last week.

But US President Barack Obama Collier de Chien hermes bracelet copy said there was no evidence yet of any contact between the gunman and Islamic State.

He said it was an example of "homegrown extremism" and it appeared Mateen was inspired by content he saw online.

What have eyewitnesses said?

There were more than 300 people inside the club at the time of the shooting. Some have been speaking about what they witnessed.

Jon Alamo said he was at the back of one of the club's rooms when a man holding a weapon entered. "I heard 20, 40, 50 shots," he told the AFP news agency. "The music stopped."
Vancouver bar under fire for offering free wings to Oilers fans

Alannah Collier de Chien hermes bracelet replica McIntyre, The Pint operations manager, was surprised by the blowback.

With the Canucks missing the playoffs for the third time in four seasons, local bars have to get creative like appealing to different fanbases if they want to survive and thrive."It's a little disappointing because we do a lot of promotions and giveaways for Canucks fans, because at our heart we will always be a Canucks bar. You just hermes jewelry replica have to walk in and see the photos on the wall and it's quite clear we cheer for the Canucks," McIntyre said. "But at the end of the day, we are a sports bar and hockey is Canada's favourite sport. A lot of people want to back a Canadian team if we can't back the Canucks."

While The Pint tries to lure in Oilers fans with wings, the Black Frog, another Gastown bar, has no choice but to turn some away.

Kitchen manager Ryan Sherbank says unless you show up at least two hours early on Oilers game night, you will not get inside.

lineup outside goes all the way around the corner, he said.

The Black Frog, which is owned and operated by ex Edmontonians, has been an Oilers bar since it opened in 2005. hermes enamel bracelet Knockoff That was the season of Edmonton improbable and ultimately heartbreaking march to the 2006 Stanley Cup Final.

The Oilers fell to the Carolina Hurricanes in Game 7 of the 2006 series and then went on to miss the playoffs 10 seasons in row, before finally thanks to young superstar Connor McDavid qualifying this year.

nothing else interesting on today? Geoffrey Edelsten jeers as he approaches the Victorian Supreme Court.

To which the reporter replies in an equally sarcastic tone: think it a required news day. suppose any job is better than nothing. I don know how you guys sleep at night, Geoffrey finishes.

Channel 10 raw copy cartier love necklace yellow gold footage of Dr. Edelsten entering the Victorian Supreme Court yesterday probably wasn seen by many yet I feel it places a question of ethics firmly back in the hands of the journalist.

In the wash up of Brynne My Bedazzled Life pilot episode Thursday of last week, the media has turned its attention to Dr. Edelsten civil trial over an American woman he met on the internet, and the month long separation between Geoffrey and Brynne in March after things got a little physical.

But who cares? And what is the responsibility of the journalist here? Is this news?

Geoffrey and Brynne are clearly a source of constant amusement for journalists and public alike but with a tone like this, why bother to report it?

Edelsten has, of course, been in the news recently. whose fault is that?

Perhaps television ratings can tell us more.

The first episode of My Bedazzled Life averaged 930,000 viewers. Last nights second episode managed only 809,000. This is despite the news of Edelsten court case.

So does this mean we don care? Or just care less?

While they garnered much social media attention, The Shire and Being Lara Bingle are examples of underwhelming reality TV. Special Night

What recognizes the special night of today from its antecedent, the wedding night, is the component of removing the couple from their interpersonal organizations by method for making a trip to areas that are interestingly new or outside. The term special night first shows up in the sixteenth century in Thomas Blount's Glossographia (1656), where he characterizes the vacation as far as the waxing and disappearing of love bird feelings. In particular, "wedded people that adoration well at to start with, and decrease in love a while later: it is nectar now, yet will change as the moon." Contemporary understandings of the special night are a long way from this unique dictionary, and the present accentuation on energy and sentiment as essential parts of the vacation today appear to be dumbfounding in light of Blount's meaning of the term.

The starting points of the special night started in European wedding customs of the privileged in the nineteenth century, bearing the couple the advantage of a marriage visit or wedding trip that frequently kept going a few weeks or months (Gillis 1985). As the white collar class developed in industrializing countries, they started to imitate the wedding visit. White collar class couples couldn't bear the cost of the scale and span of the marriage visit as honed by well off ladies and grooms.

The parts of men and ladies with regards to the special first night have likewise developed. Proof proposes that the vacation has turned out to be progressively feminized after some time, bringing about the custom of today, of which the lady of the hour is the inside (Bulcroft, Bulcroft, Smeins, and Cranage 1997). In America, men were for the most part in charge of arranging and executing the vacation until the mid twentieth century. As relational unions progressively stressed companionate instead of marital parts, sentiment and individual personalities picked up in significance. Subsequently, the special night mirrors the accentuation that late current social orders place on independence, defense, utilization, and making custom to mitigate view of danger and instability (Beck 1992; Habermas1970).

Since character is in question, couples look for flawlessness in special night sentiment, yet go to new places to acknowledge increased desires sets up a connection for disappointment. To alleviate this danger, couples frequently pick bundled special nights, in which lodgings, resorts, and journey lines give a sorted out system of rooms, dinners, and exercises. This longing for a danger free special night is energized by rules for fruitful wedding trips found in books, marriage and travel magazines, and Internet sites, and it adds to a quickly developing specialty in the worldwide tourism industry.

    The Honeymoon as Romantic Consumption

Conversely with customary wellsprings of character development, for example, group, family, clover necklace replica or national birthplace, postindustrial personality to a great extent is perceived through product decisions (Shields 1992). The special first night is a social creation of utilization that develops current convictions in sentiment (Bulcroft, Smeins, and Bulcroft 1999). Sentiment is accepted to be genuine, and it is made unmistakable when couples in regular day to day existence fortify their own Frivole necklace replica associations with ceremonies in which items build their sentiment. Blossoms, champagne, and candlelight meals, for instance, are getting to be fake Van Cleef & Arpels Clover necklace price all inclusive props for building sentiment (Illouz 1997). The special first night includes a collection of these typical fixings and exercises over an expanded timeframe in a visitor setting. Faith in sentiment is globally delivered in motion pictures and other contemporary media, and the thought of a wedding trip as the event for encountering it seriously is advanced comparably, and particularly through publicizing. The joining of convictions in sentiment, character through utilization, and a forceful travel industry has rendered the vacation as a social standard not just for hetero couples who wed interestingly. Wedding trips mark ensuing relational unions, and second special first nights inside relational unions are taken to resuscitate recollected sentiment. Gay and lesbian couples who formalize their unions likewise arrange sentimental wedding trips, and numerous travel organizations, inns and journey lines offer particular bundles for them.

    pression saisonni

Mon autre peine arrive fin janvier.

Gene Weingarten's humor column, Below the Beltway, appears every Sunday in The Washington Post magazine.

At one time or another, Below the Beltway has managed to offend persons of both sexes as well as individuals belonging to every religious, ethnic, regional, political and socioeconomic group. If you know of a group we have missed, please write in and the situation will be promptly rectified. "Rectified" is a funny word.

On one Tuesday each month, Gene is online to take your questions and abuse. One reason for the confusion is the Underpants Paradox: Blogs, like underpants, contain "threads," whereas this chat contains no "threads" but, like underpants, does sometimes get funky and inexcusable.

Today is shaping up to be a comics intensive chat. If you haven't hit the polls, please do so now, because I am going to talk about Dennis The Menace right here, soon.

Shortly after passage of the Health Care bill, I got an e mail from Garry Trudeau. It was very simple. Garry linked to a news photo, and wrote only this: "Look to the left of his watch."

Yes, folks, just to put things in perspective. At the transcendent moment of his new presidency, the commander in chief of the Western World was getting inspiration from the Washington Post Sunday Funnies. For the record, it is open to "Doonesbury," "Pickles," and "Sherman's Lagoon." Now, it may just be that Obama is a big "Pickles" fan, but I'm guessing he'd just looked at this.

Okay. Speaking of comics, today in this very space we unveil for the first time the grand designs of "Barney Clyde," the comic strip created by me, my son, Dan Weingarten, and cartoonist David Clark. Here it is, explained in the brand new "Barney and Clyde" Facebook fan page, which you are hereby cordially invited to join.

One day in 2005, I got a package in the mail from a cartoonist whose work I admire enormously. He had come up with a cartier yellow gold love bracelet replica new newspaper comic strip, and wanted my opinion of it. The truth was, I didn't like it much. Dan who was 20 and living in my basement didn't like it much, either. He went on and on about why it sucked until he started getting me mad.

I explained to my son, lovingly and patiently, what a gigantic horse's ass he was being presuming to belittle the work of a cartooning legend, a man thrice his age, just because he happened to misfire this once. I told Dan that coming up with a workable idea for a comic strip was a very difficult thing, and that it was churlish and callow and outrageous of someone with no experience at all to be so judgmental and dismissive. Dan grumbled and muttered and shuffled away into his room. I went back to work in my basement dungeon office.

Five minutes later, Dan returned and said "You know what would be a good idea? A comic strip about a friendship between a billionaire and a bum." Then he shuffled out again. I stared at my computer screen for a minute, got up from my desk, walked over to a calendar on the wall, and circled the date: April 28. That's the birthday of "Barney Clyde."

I figured it would take us about four months to find a cartoonist and get into a few hundred newspapers. So, yes, it has been five years in development. Dan has since moved out, gone back to college, won the Nobel Prize in physics, etc. We have more than a year's worth already written and drawn.

We found David Clark, the cartoonist, through my friend, the great Richard Thompson. David is a hayseed who is holed up in the hills of Luray, Virginny with his woman, three young uns, and assorted critters. He is an artist and a half.

The Syndicate (I love this term) doesn't want me to release any strips, but you can find the characters on the Facebook page, and a brief description of what the strip is about. I'm happy to field questions, and take brickbats, here.

Also, I'd be grateful for any ideas for how we can make this site interesting, interactive, subversively lascivious, etc., once the strip debuts.

The "Dennis The Menace" cartoons in the poll were the first cartoons I ever saw. They're straight from a book that my parents had in the house when I was a baby published in 1952, the year after I was born. They're apropos today because they stand as a reminder to me what can happen to a good idea, over time and under market pressures, if you are not careful.

Have you ever wondered why Dennis was a "menace"? Well, now you know. He used to be.

When Hank Ketcham started this strip in 1950 to near universal applause, "Dennis the Menace" was a mean spirited brat who did awful things. He stuck the cat's tail in a wall socket. He scissored up books and cut pigtails off little girls. He twisted swans' necks into pretzels. There was a good reason Mr. Wilson hated him. The strip had a nice raw edge that seemed both familiar and strangely comforting to frazzled baby boom parents: Dennis was even more of a handful than their kids.

As its client constituency got broader and spread across the square states, "Dennis" soon succumbed to the numbing and dumbing committee effect. Then came the TV show, which delivered the coup de grace: Dennis Mitchell became likeably mischievous, then just cute, and, eventually, just sickeningly precious. He's still there.

Dan, David and I hope to remember this always and resist dairy calls to homogenize and sweeten.

And yes, poll wise, old was waaaay better than new. Edge is good. The one in which Henry Mitchell took Dennis to the strip club instead of the zoo is simply breathtakingly great. The only place I disagree with the poll results is that I think Ruff in the corner is excellent. It's just a wonderful sight gag.

Hank Ketcham's art was very, very good. I asked Bob Staake, the Style Invitational and New Yorker cover cartoonist (in that order) to explain why. It's the fluidity of line, he said the feel that it was drawn in one grand, effortless sweep. The style has been copied by cartoonists for the last half century. Bob says it falls short of great that it's mostly very competent, very professional, but not utterly brilliant like Walt Kelly (Pogo). I would have called it world class, but I defer to an expert.

My friend Horace LaBadie supplies today's news clip gem, which is both a Person Who Should Be Convicted on Mug Shot Alone, AND one of the greatest aptonyms in the history of the world:

    WOODSTOCK, Ga.

Police said investigators went to Patrick Molesti's Woodstock home last Thursday with a search warrant and recovered a computer with child pornography on it. Molesti was not at home at the time.

I mentioned this a long time ago in your chat, and you said I am quite unusual. But I want to do a quick informal poll and find out how true that is. Basically, I've been involved with my boyfriend for many years. We are both 40 somethings. We have the same attitude you do about cartier gold bracelet replica marriage (no need) but remain fully committed to each other. We are best friends. Here's where we probably differ from most people I don't care if he "gets some" occasionally. I mean, I believe sex is sex and it's different from love, and if he gets the opportunity (say, while on a business trip) to get some "strange", well, I don't mind if he takes it. We have 3 rules (no lies to anyone, must be safe, and it mustn't impinge on our own GREAT sex life). How weird cartier yellow gold love bracelet copy am I? I must say it really rarely happens (the strange) and as he once said (maybe half joking) "you've taken the fun out of cheating!". But that wasn't my intent I just think it adds to our own enjoyment of each other. Variety is the spice of life.

    Van Gogh the Tweaker

For a long time, it's been something of a dirty secret, violating ideas about great artistic originality: Vincent van Gogh frequently made copies of his own work. Now, in an about face, what is seemingly the least original aspect of van Gogh's method is offering a close up glimpse into the strange, obsessive intensity of his creative process.

His curious practice of copying himself provides the impetus for a new exhibition, "Van Gogh Repetitions," which opens on Saturday at the Phillips Collection in Washington and then travels to Cleveland.

In the 19th century, when the academy ruled, making copies played a central role in professional art training. Students often worked for years carefully copying plaster casts of ancient sculptures before they were allowed to make an original painting. Some never went on to do anything else.

But during the 20th century, this practice fell into disrepute. It came to be viewed as anti artistic. At its most extreme, copying can easily drift into forgery, a criminal act. Because of this modern distaste for copying, van Gogh's replicas of his own work, which he called rptitions, have sometimes even been dismissed by overly vigilant scholars as fakes.

The exhibition brings together 13 instances in which van Gogh made more than one version of a work and often hermes enamel bracelet replica multiple versions. In the show's catalog, a team of scholars and conservators, led by William Robinson and Eliza Rathbone, assemble and analyze documents that are clues to when van Gogh made a copy of what. Perhaps most significant, this team uses new technical evidence, such as X rays and high resolution digital imagery, firmly to resolve questions about the sequence of these works that have confounded scholars and fans of van Gogh until now.

An international group of van Gogh scholars Louis van Tilborgh, a curator at the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam; Timothy J. Standring at the Denver Art Museum, hermes bracelet replica cheap curator of "Becoming van Gogh"; and Cornelia Homburg, a curator of "Van Gogh: Up Close" applaud this effort. They note that it increases our understanding of van Gogh and shows what authentic works possess that fakes lack. Mr. Standring said that the show invites viewers to "establish perhaps their own conclusions."

A specific pair of paintings by van Gogh one in Cleveland, the other in Washington inspired the exhibition. In May 1889, van Gogh made two very similar versions of the same painting: "The Large Plane Trees (Road Menders at Saint Rmy)," now in the Cleveland Museum of Art, and "The Road Menders," in the Phillips Collection. Despite their different titles, the paintings are virtually identical in their outlines so close that van Gogh may have traced one to paint the other.

Their existence has long been known; they were shown side by side at a van Gogh exhibition in Cleveland in 1948. But, partly because the whole process of making copies has been viewed as morally suspect, the exact relationship of the two works has never been studiously examined.

In addition, van Gogh made a number of little improvements in the second version, at the Phillips. "You can see he moved the street lamp to the left to make it stand out," Mr. Robinson said. "He added more lines to the tree. He even added an additional figure of a man digging on the far right."

Which of the two paintings is better? If you think copying is bad, then clearly the Cleveland version is better. Unfortunately, we don't have van Gogh's vote. But in other instances he often declared that he considered the replica the better painting, the more significant work of art.

In letters to his brother Theo, van Gogh frequently declared that he viewed the repetitions as an opportunity to improve and clarify his initial composition, since he was able to work more slowly and carefully than when painting outdoors with gawking bystanders and shifting light. In many of his copies (as illustrated in this exhibition), van Gogh's brush work is smoother, more careful and more deliberate than in the first version. As he explained to Theo, he could transform a painting from a direct transcription of a scene into a true work of the imagination.

Closely examining the two versions of the road mending scene inch by inch can be tiring, but that's a small challenge compared with sorting out what van Gogh was up to when he made three versions of his bedroom at Arles, and six paintings and three drawings of the postman Joseph Roulin.

What's surprising is how different the six postman paintings appear when side by side. In one, the eyebrows are bushy; in another they are a wiggly horizontal line. Sometimes we hermes replica bracelet see the left ear, sometimes we don't. We start to read in personality traits: Some of the postmen stare us down, and others look distracted or self absorbed or possibly even hermes bangle replica slightly crazed.

"In the case of 'The Road Menders' and 'The Large Plane Trees,'" Mr. Robinson said, "it's easy to tell which came first. But in the case of the nine postmen, the variables are so large that art historians are still arguing the point."

"By the time he got to the later versions of the group," he said, "van Gogh wasn't working from a single model, but was drawing from three or four earlier versions and combining them in new ways."

The nine postmen are not so much repetitions, then, but variations on an idea, not unlike the way a composer like Bach created successive variations on a theme in music. In a seeming paradox, van Gogh was never more inventive than when copying himself.
Vancouver hermes clic clac bracelet replica Island parrot refuge set to close Aug

COOMBS Hundreds of parrots living at a Vancouver Island sanctuary need new homes as an Aug. 1 deadline approaches for the closure of the World Parrot Refuge.

Between 450 and 500 parrots, including macaws, cockatoos, lovebirds and conures, are up for adoption, following the death last February of refuge founder Wendy Huntbatch.

At one point she had more than 800 parrots at the refuge, which includes 2,100 square metres of heated indoor free flight avaries and about 1,500 square metres of outdoor flight area.

The refuge was open to the public.

An obituary posted on the refuge website by her son Justin Huntbatch says his mother replica hermes bracelet devoted last 25 years of her life to the health and welfare of ex breeder and ex pet parrots. goal was to educate people why parrots should not be pets, to stop the trafficking and importing of parrots into Canada and to provide a home for life for those parrots that were here already. The refuge which is home to some 400 to 500 exotic birds who have been rescued mostly from Vancouver Island and parts of British Columbia is slated to close in August due to lack of funds to keep it running.

Spate said parrots can be difficult pets, which is why many of those living at the refuge were given up for adoption. Some can live to be 75 years old.

take a lot of work and they often outlive their owners, he said. need a lot of attention and when they don get enough attention they do get into trouble. Stories of people getting their kitchen ruined or base boards ripped off are not uncommon. are loud, he said. Their squawks and screeches are louder than barking dogs, said Spate. They also talk, often knock off hermes bracelet mimicking the words of their owners.

also get bit quite a bit, he said. definitely get put through the ringer. But once you get to know the birds and they get to know you, they are actually great animals who are very intelligent and very personable. refuge is contacting the previous owners of the refuge adopted parrots and asking if they want them back.

The city council in nearby Nanaimo has agreed to a short term lease of a former Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Shelter to give some of the parrots a temporary home, Spate said.

He said he expects to find homes and shelter for all the parrots.

Road rage needs to be next driving target

Earlier this week, the Daily News detailed the troubling tale of a grandfather who had his windows smashed out after what police said was a road rage incident.

Don Peters was driving along Highway 19A near Departure Bay Road in Nanaimo and pulled up next to a vehicle being driven in what he described as a "dangerous" way. In Peters' van were his 19 year old daughter and four month old grandchild.

After an exchange of words, a passenger in the other vehicle, according to Peters, tossed a milkshake at the van, then took a baseball bat and began hitting his vehicle.

Though the baby was in the vehicle, the man smashed the van's windows, then apparently accidentally smashed a window in the car he was riding in.

Police stopped the car shortly after, and charges are pending.

    Fortunately, no one was injured.

As shocking as that incident was, it paled in comparison to what unfolded in Langley. Thursday when the driver of a white truck that had earlier forced O'Brien's vehicle into a ditch, suddenly returned.

O'Brien was standing with two friends alongside his white Silverado pickup when the white truck accelerated at them.

The friends, Sam Dooley and Luke Stevens, managed to scramble clear, but O'Brien was struck and killed. The vehicle that hit him quickly fled the scene.

The young men had been on their way to the Vancouver airport for a trip to Hawaii.

Police blamed severe road rage in the death.

Sadly, police have noticed that incidents of road rage are on the upswing.

Nanaimo RCMP investigate at least two road rage incidents a week.

They range from drivers threatening other drivers, saying obscene things or actual violence.

Most of us have been upset at one point or another while behind the wheel.

Anyone who has driven for any length of time has been cut off by someone changing lanes without signalling.

Most of us have been behind a driver going 55 km/h in the fast lane on the highway, or behind a driver who waits a few too many seconds before realizing the light is green.

But any reaction beyond a few muttered words under your breath or a short honk of the horn should be unacceptable.

Since police Classic fake van cleef jewelry are so concerned about the increase in the road rage incidents, asking imitation Van Cleef & Arpels jewelry copy our lawmakers to sit up and take notice is one way of addressing the concerns.

Harsher penalties, particularly long driving bans, should result for anyone convicted of violent offences stemming from road rage.

Extensive and successful campaigns have helped both the public and policy makers take notice of the ills of fake VCA ring price drinking and driving.

More recently, banning the use of cellphones while driving has become a bit of a cause celebre.

    And rightly so.

The notion that we can simply do what we want while behind the wheel is absurd.

Driving requires all of your mental faculties. If doing so means you are unable to remain attentive, measured and calm, regardless of the circumstances, you should not be driving.

Also important is the reminder never to take things into your own hands. If you see another motorist driving dangerously or erratically, do not attempt to stop them or engage them in any way.
