There's really nothing to it

Here's a treat for anybody as eager as I am to be transported back to the heady days of New York in the 1960s and '70s. That was when the old idea of art as a painted canvas or a bronze sculpture finally imploded, replica cartier love series, and the new idea blossomed that art might be the action of stretching a piece of string across a room or driving past the Guggenheim at 100mph.

The American Minimalist Fred Sandback was only 24 in 1967 when he created his breakthrough work, an outline in string and wire of a 20ft wooden plank that he had removed from the room. All that was left was the record of the object, yet the perception of the viewer was that the plank remained. For the next 36 years, Sandback experimented with creating illusions from empty space, his materials changing only fractionally as he progressed from string to his trademark lengths of coloured acrylic yarn.

Sandback was 59 when he committed suicide in his studio in 2003 and his estate is now represented by David Zwirner, the New York dealer who has recently opened a new London gallery in a converted Mayfair townhouse. This month, 12 pieces by the artist have been installed on two floors, the taut coloured yarns stretching from wall to wall or floor to ceiling as if Spider Man had just spun them.

Sandback's work has been little seen in Britain, and this show is an informative introduction. In Yellow Diagonal (1974) the exquisite simplicity of the artist's practice is illustrated by a single piece of yarn which casts a shadow on the wall to complete a triangle. Meanwhile, in Two Part Standing Construction (1978), a pair of outlined squares set at right angles appear from some viewpoints as panes of glass.

Whether the effect here is quite as unsettling as Sandback intended seems unlikely: Minimalism makes very high demands on the spaces where it is shown and even in this simple white gallery, normally inoffensive details such as lighting tracks and air vents make harsh intrusions on the purity of the work.

Upstairs, however, there is a pure, unadulterated Sandback moment: here a set of orange outlines, from his Close series, form three oblongs stretched across a corner of the gallery. Free of unwelcome interference, replica cartier diamond love bracelet, these shapes appear to move before your eyes a conjuring act of artful genius performed with only a few coloured lines.

Not far from David Zwirner is another new gallery, this one owned by Michael Werner, the German dealer who befriended many of theartists of the post war period who followed the shamanistic teachings of Joseph Beuys. Among these artists was the Detroit born JamesLee Byars (Michael Werner Gallery, London), an eccentric figure who persuaded the renowned MoMA curator Dorothy Miller to let him stage his first show on a fire escape at the museum in 1958.

Around this time, Byers moved to Japan for nine years and his subsequent works and performance pieces one of which was the 100mph drive past the Guggenheim were often inspired by its culture, replica cartier leve bracelet, in particular the dramatised unfolding of lengthy pieces of hand made paper. After Byars' death in 1997, in the suitably exotic setting of the Anglo American hospital, Cairo, obituaries noted his penchant for dressing in gold suits, accompanied by a top hat and veil or, occasionally, replica cartier love bracelet size 18, a blindfold.

The show at Michael Werner surely a precursor to a retrospective displays early sculptures and remnants from his performances on a plinth, like relics in a museum. The meticulously preserved folded paper sheets from his performances one of them over 100ft long are shown in glass boxes like sacred objects. Alongside these are his roughly carved stone sculptures, together with an elongated wooden Self Portrait (1959), delicately laid out like a skeleton in an excavated tomb, all of which represent man in his most primitive form.

A second and larger room has been devoted to the display of a later piece called The Angel (1989). Over one year in Venice, Byars devised this sculpture made of 125 glass globes, each blown in a single breath by a Murano craftsman. The globes are laid out on the floor in a looping shape which refers to the Japanese kanji character for "man". So as we look into the room it is arranged according to Byars's instructions as if the entire space were a vitrine we see the essence of human life brilliantly distilled into these fragile and transparent little reliquaries.

Rsultats complets

Rsultats complets

Ouf! Quelle journe!

The 'Bratty Kid' Who Took Down The Internet

This week, the country's second largest health insurance company, Anthem, said hackers broke into a database with personal information about 80 million of its customers. It's just the latest in a string of large scale cyber attacks Sony, Staples, Home Depot, and JPMorgan Chase have all been attacked in the last nine months alone.

In January, President Obama said the cybercrime laws that are supposed to protect consumers from such attacks and give the government tools to prosecute cybercriminals need to be updated.

In 2000, a high school student named Michael Calce, who went by the online handle Mafiaboy, brought down the websites of Amazon, CNN, Dell, ETrade, eBay, and Yahoo!. van cleef and arpels engagement ring fake At the time, Yahoo! was the biggest search engine in the world.

"The New York Stock Exchange, they were freaking out, because they were all investing in these e commerce companies," he remembers.

"And then it's like, 'OK a 15 year old kid can shut us down at any point? Is our money really safe?' "

For years after the attack, Calce declined to speak to the media, but he's recently begun to open up about his story. He says his goal had nothing to do with money and that ultimately, he thinks, his attack has a positive impact.

"I'm a pretty calm, collected, cool person, but when you have the president of the United States and attorney general basically calling you out . at that point I was a little worried."

The story begins when Calce got his first computer, at the age of 6.

"I was a pretty bratty kid. I come from a divorced family. My father had custody on the weekends and he wasn't exactly sure how to preoccupy me so he took a computer from his work and brought it home and was like 'Here, figure out what to do with it.' "

A few years later, Calce got a free trial of AOL. It was his first time on the internet, and within a few days the 9 year old hacked the system so he could stay online past the 30 day trial period.

He got more and more involved in online hacker groups. In 2000, he launched the hack that made him famous first taking over a handful of university networks, and then harnessing their combined computing power to attack outside websites.

"Basically when I hit enter on the keyboard, [the university networks] all respond at the same exact time and basically overwhelm websites with too much information," he explains. It's called a denial of service attack.

Within hours, he had taken down six major websites.

"The overall purpose was to intimidate other hacker groups," says Calce.

Back then, he says, van cleef and arpels frivole ring replica "the whole of the hacking community was all about notoriety and exploration, whereas you look at hackers today and it's all about monetization."

For the national security apparatus, the attack was a wake up call. President Clinton convened a cybersecurity working group. Attorney General Janet Reno announced a manhunt for Mafiaboy.

"You know I'm a pretty calm, collected, cool person, but when you have the president of the United States and attorney general basically calling you out and saying 'We're going to find you' . at that point I was a little bit worried," says Calce.

He was right to be worried. The FBI was on his trail.

"It was pretty obvious that they were surveilling my place."

The case eventually went to trial in Canada, where Calce is from. The Clinton administration sent cybersecurity experts to testify.

"It was a pretty big ordeal," says Calce. "It didn't really matter what I said at that point. They just wanted to make an example out of me."

He was charges with more than 50 crimes and eventually sentenced to eight months in a youth group home.

Today, Calce is what's called a white hat hacker. Companies hire him to help identify security flaws in their systems and design better security features. He says the internet is a far scarier place today than it was back in 2000. For one, there is more and more at stake as we rely ever more on online systems van cleef and arpels butterfly ring replica for our daily lives.

Looking back, he thinks some good did come from the attack he launched.

"It raised a lot of issues," he says. "It definitely advanced and created a pretty big focus on security, and the problems and inherent flaws that come with computers and internet."

Rockhampton police fine rubberneckers

Rockhampton police have fined several people for ignoring warnings to stay away from flooded areas as the city's streets slowly go under due to the rising Fitzroy River.

The Fitzroy hit van cleef and arpels wedding ring replica 8.45 metres at 1pm on Wednesday, just shy of the 8.5m level considered a major flood.

Many low lying parts of the city have now had water over roads, and houses and businesses cut off due to water spilling out from the river and bubbling up through storm drains.

Senior Sergeant Ewan Findlater said they had issued a handful of infringement notices of up to $731 to motorists who had gone too close to affected areas.

"A lot of damage is caused by floodwaters coming up slowly, and the bow wave from cars can cause damage to people's homes," Snr Sgt Findlater said.

"So if we see people disobeying signage we will take action."

District disaster van cleef wedding ring replica co ordinator Superintendent Ron Van Saane said van cleef perlee ring fake the activation of the Yeppen flood management plan meant the north south connection through the town would stay open, with diversions in place to take vehicles over the new Yeppen bypass which didn't flood.

"It is a lot slower than you would expect on the highway, but the best thing about it is it's continuing to flow, the speed limit has been reduced to 40 km/h, and so far we hope that'll continue throughout the next couple of days," Supt Van Saane said.

The city is bracing for floodwaters to peak at 9 metres on Thursday morning, which will see about 200 houses with water over the floorboards, as well as cutting off or otherwise affecting about 3000 homes and businesses in low lying suburbs.

If you hear God speak audibly

My Take: If you hear God speak audibly, you (usually) aren't crazyMost people reading the ancient scriptures understand these accounts of hearing God's voice as miracles that really did happen but no longer take place today, or maybe as folkloric flourishes to ancient stories. Even Christians who believe that miracles can be an everyday affair can hesitate when someone tells them they heard God speak audibly. There's an old joke: When you talk to God, we call it prayer, but when God talks to you, we call it schizophrenia.

Hearing a voice when alone, or seeing something no one else can see, is pretty common. At least one in 10 people will say they've had such an experience if you ask them bluntly. About four in 10 say they have unusual perceptual experiences between sleep and awareness if you interview them about their sleeping habits.

Follow the CNN Belief Blog on Twitter

And if you ask them in a way that allows them to admit they made a mistake, the rate climbs even higher. By contrast, schizophrenia, the most debilitating of all mental disorders, is pretty rare. Only about one in 100 people can be diagnosed with the disorder.

Moreover, the patterns are quite distinct. People with schizophrenia who hear voices hear them frequently. They often hear them throughout the day, sometimes like a rain of sound, or a relentless hammer. They hear not only sentences, but paragraphs: words upon words upon words. What the voices say is horrid insults, sneers and contemptuous jibes. "Dirty. You're dirty." "Stupid slut." "You should've gone under the bus, not into it."

That was not what Abraham, Moses and Job experienced, even when God was at his most fierce.

For the last 10 years, I have been doing anthropological and psychological research among experientially oriented evangelicals, the sort of people who seek a personal relationship with God and who expect that God will talk back. For most of them, most of the time, God talks back in a quiet voice they hear inside their minds, or through images that come to mind during prayer. But many of them also reported sensory experiences of God. They say God touched their shoulder, or that he spoke up from the back seat and said, in a way they heard with their ears, that he loved them. Indeed, van cleef and arpels knock off necklace, in 1999, Gallup reported that 23% of all Americans had heard a voice or seen a vision in response to prayer.

These experiences were brief: at the most, a few words or short sentences. They were rare. Those who reported them reported no more than a few of them, if that. These experiences were not distressing, although they were often disconcerting and always startling. On the contrary, these experiences often made people feel more intimate with God, and more deeply loved.

In fact, my research has found that these unusual sensory experiences are more common among those who pray in a way that uses the imagination for example, when prayer involves talking to God in your mind. The unusual sensory experiences were not, in general, associated with mental illness (we checked).

They were more common among those who felt comfortable getting caught up in their imaginations. They were also more common among those who prayed for longer periods. Prayer involves paying attention to words and images in the mind, and giving them significance. There is something about the skilled practice of paying attention to the mind in this way that shifts just a little bit the way we judge what is real.

Yet even many of these Christians, who wanted so badly to have a back and forth relationship with God, were a little hesitant to talk about hearing God speak with their ears. For all the biblical examples of hearing God speak audibly, they doubt. Augustine reports that when he was in extremis, sobbing at the foot of that fig tree, van cleef knock off alhambra necklace, he heard a voice say, "Take it and read." He picked up the scripture and converted. When the Christians I know heard God speak audibly, it often flitted across their minds that they were crazy. He took a hearty dose of methamphetamines as a young doctor, and settled down with a 19th century book on migraines. He loved the book, with its detailed observation and its humanity. He wanted more. As he was casting around in his mind for someone who could write more that he could read, a loud internal voice told him "You silly bugger" that it was he. So he began to write. He never took drugs again.

Now, Sacks does not recommend that anyone take drugs like that. He thinks that what he did was dangerous and he thinks he was lucky to have survived.

What interests me, however, is that he allowed himself to trust the voice because the voice was good. There's a distinction between voices associated with psychiatric illness (often bad) and those (often good) that are found in the so called normal population. There's another distinction between those who choose to listen to a voice, if the advice it gives is good, and those who do not. When people like Sacks hear a voice that gives them good advice, van cleef and arpels butterfly fake necklace, the experience can transform them.

CNN's Belief Blog: The faith angles behind the biggest stories

This is important, because often, when voices are discussed in the media or around the kitchen table, the voices are treated unequivocally as symptoms of madness. And of course, voice hearing is associated with psychiatric illness.

But not all the time. In fact, not most of the time.

About a third of the people I interviewed carefully at the church where I did research reported an unusual sensory experience they associated with God. While they found these experiences startling, they also found them deeply reassuring.

Science cannot tell us whether God generated the voice that Abraham or Augustine heard. But it can tell us that many of these events are normal, part of the fabric of human perception. History tells us that those experiences enable people to choose paths they should choose, but for various reasons they hesitate to choose. sat at his kitchen table, in the winter of 1956, terrified by the fear of what might happen to him and his family during the Montgomery bus boycott, he said he heard the voice of Jesus promising, "I will be with you." He went forward.

Voices may form part of human suffering, van cleef arpel replica necklace. They also may inspire human greatness.

The opinions expressed in this commentary are solely those of TM Luhrmann.

Beloved, many false prophets have gone out into the world. So do not believe or trust every spirit, but test the spirits to see if they are from God.

This is how you can recognise God's Spirit:

Every spirit who confesses that Jesus Christ came to earth as a human [in the flesh] is from God. And every spirit who refuses to say this about Jesus [does not confess or acknowledge Jesus] is not from God.
Know About Color That Almost Seem Too Ridiculous To Be True

You likely take the various colors around you for granted, assuming there's nothing special about the blue of your jeans or anything potentially disgusting about the browns of that painting you bought at an antique store. But many colors are derived from odd sources.

For instance, rulers of France and much of Europe had to be wary, van cleef replica butterfly necklace, for not knowing about certain colors was potentially deadly. Green wallpaper can be much more dangerous than you thought.

Much of the research behind these eight bizarre facts is extensively based on journalist Victoria Finlay's amazing 2014 book The Brilliant History of Color in Art,van cleef and arpels fake butterfly necklace.

1. Until 1925, a common shade of brown was made from the flesh of Egyptian mummies.

Smithsonian dates the end of "mummy brown" as late as 1964, when the "manufacturer" ran out of mummies to grind into paint. Painters had been using mummy brown for centuries, collecting the bizarre substance, likely at first from an apothecary, that would sell for medicinal purposes.

Victoria Finlay explains in The Brilliant History of Color in Art how this came about:

Actually, mummy was first used as a medicinal substance as early as 1300, which is even more bizarre. Virtually all the pigments that were known to painters from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance were also medicines, including lead white, minium, vermilion, chalk, orpiment, sepia, ultramarine . and mummy. These medicines were supplied by apothecaries, who were the main sources of supplies for painters. No doubt an artist somewhere saw mummy in his local apothecary shop and thought, "I wonder if this would make a good bit of paint?"

Eventually in 1712, an artist supply shop was opened in Paris called la Momie or "To the Mummy." The color really took off and later in the century and according to Finlay it was said that the finest brown used by the current president of the Royal Academy of Arts was "the flesh of mummy, the most fleshy are the best parts."

If you're curious what ground up mummies looks like as art, the above painting, "Interior of a Kitchen," owned by The Louvre and painted by Martin Drlling in 1815 apparently uses "mummy brown" extensively.

As mentioned before, you probably couldn't find mummy brown to paint with these days. An article in Time from 1964 quoted Geoffrey Roberson Park, the managing director of a respected London color maker, as saying, "We might have a few odd limbs lying around somewhere, but not enough to make any more paint."

2,van cleef necklace replica alhambra. The royal purple made famous by the Romans and Cleopatra was created by soaking thousands of rotten shellfish in urine.

Finlay writes in The Brilliant History of Color in Art that Queen Cleopatra was obsessed with this color and had everything from sails to sofas dyed in the pigment, van cleef & arpels knock off necklace.

Although the color came to mean extreme wealth, the process of making this purple was beyond disgusting, as Finlay explains, "More than 250,000 murex brandaris and murex trunculus shellfish were needed to extract half an ounce of dye, just enough for a single toga."

And according to Finlay's book, the process of making the purple smelled so bad that it had to be done outside city walls. This disgustingness then stuck with the color:

These purple vats had to be outside the city walls because no one could live next to the horrible smell made by rotten shellfish soaking in stale urine mixed with wood ash and water. Even the clothes that had been dyed with them had a distinctive odor of fish and sea. The historian Pliny called it "offensive," but for other Romans it was the smell of money.

According to Smithsonian, this gross process more or less continued as late as 1856, when a new purple was created as the first synthetic dye by an 18 year old chemist named William Perkin.

3. The iconic yellow paint Van Gogh used in many of his paintings may have actually been partially to blame for his mental state.

What caused Vincent Van Gogh's mental state has not been conclusively determined, but that his own painting might have been a big factor is certainly an interesting theory. In a paper called "Vincent van Gogh and the Toxic Colors of Saturn," by F. Javier Gonzlez Luque and A. Luis Montejo Gonzlez, it's argued that the lead paints, particularly Van Gogh's "chrome yellow," may have been the cause stating:

Because of his impasto technique, based on thick layers of paint, Van Gogh resorted to colors with a high content of lead, such as white lead (lead carbonate) or chrome yellow (lead chromate), in the mixtures he prepared. These pigments are highly toxic in oil painting, and their use entails the risk of saturnism.

If the "chrome yellow" was to blame, it would have been particularly harmful to Van Gogh when he squeezed a tube of the paint into his mouth as Finlay writes in The Brilliant History of Color in Art.

4. Red light might cause people to become stronger.

A few notable tests support this claim, with one by University of Durham in 2005 even stating that sports uniforms should be rethought due to the advantage. The study concluded "red enhances human performance in contests," but also said:

Across a range of sports, we find that wearing red is consistently associated with a higher probability of winning. These results indicate not only that sexual selection may have influenced the evolution of human response to colors, but also that the color of sportswear needs to be taken into account to ensure a level playing field in sport.

Maybe the red Chicago Bulls uniforms are partly why Michael Jordan won so many championships?

Another study by Samford University in 2008 that focused on the "effect of light color on muscular strength and power," stated that a "repeated measures multivariate analysis of variance indicated that average muscular power was significantly higher when performing the test in the room with red light compared to rooms lit with blue light or white light." So Roxanne probably should have put on that red light.

This red effect even seems to affect video games as a 2004 study discovered that red players tend to win more often.

5. There was spray painting in prehistoric times.

Although this spray painting didn't come from cans, the Lascaux Caves paintings from about 17,000 years ago were most likely done with a technique that involved spraying paint on to the cave walls. In The Brilliant History of Color in Art, Finlay explains, "The paint on the Great Bull was applied by mixing ground minerals with something liquid and then spraying it from the mouth, either straight or with a blowpipe."

Novashelter recommence.
