Staten Island Makerspace Creates Mobile Unit
An old box truck will soon become a place where students and adults can turn their ideas into something tangible.
"It's really sort of exposing people to the new age of digital fabrication but also the traditional hands on building Van Cleef & Arpels wedding ring copy of things," said Staten Island Makerspace's Executive Director, Scott Van Campen.
For the last two years, innovators and kids have traveled to Staten Island Makerspace in Stapleton to get public access to tools in the non profits metal and wood shops.
"We can come and make little robots," said Lakota Serpica, who visited the Makerspace with her Girl Scout troop.
Jason Kass has been operating his 'Toilets for People' business from Makerspace's Front Street warehouse.
"I've been at Makerspace for a year and a half and its give us space to do prototyping and designs," said Kass.
"Our mobile makerspace is going to have a drill press, band saw, chop saw, laser cutter, 3D printer, 10 work stations for teaching kids how to use high tech software" Van Campen said.
The new mobile makerspace will also help bring their Staten Island location to other boroughs like Manhattan.
"They can also do what they do here and teach other kids on how to make things," said Serpica.

"Sometimes it's the logistics of brining all those kids into a space bussing them back and forth is difficult," Kass explained.
