"We understand we have to flexible with changing society norms, and we want to make sure we hire the best," he added. "We will mentor you to be successful, no matter what your background is. I'm a 25 year member, and there's not one day that I've ever regretted my decision to become a police officer. The profession sells itself."
Sgt. Al Gosbee, who is in charge of recruitment, said the VDP has had significant attrition in recent years through age and other officers leaving policing and the recruitment drive is needed to keep police numbers at an optimal level.
The basic requirements are being at least 19 years old, having a good character, being a citizen or permanent resident, and holding a Class 5 driver licence. But the VPD also wants at 30 credits of post secondary courses and not necessarily in police related fields like criminology or law.
"We're looking for people who are mature and have some life experience," Gosbee said, noting many officers have business or finance degrees. "Our recommendation is that you take something you are truly interested in and you will do well in. You can then use that knowledge to your advantage in the future.
Staff Sgt. Terry Yung, who has specialized in outreach to the Chinese community in addition to a number of other duties in the past, said the diversity of officers' backgrounds extends beyond linguistic communication.
"It's not just translation or the fact you speak the language," Yung said. "It's the cultural sensitivity. Some people are hesitant when reporting a crime; there was a groping case on the SkyTrain, and the young lady didn't want to come forward because she felt ashamed.
