Memorial for Canadian convicts sent to Tasmania rededicated in Hobart

A memorial for almost 100 political prisoners sent from Canada to Australia's penal colonies following an 1830s rebellion has been rededicated in Hobart.

The large granite monument was removed in 2004 and has been updated with more accurate historical details.

The Canadian rebellions of 1837 and 1838, which van cleef red clover necklace replica took place in what is now Ontario, were sparked by anger over political reform in North America, but failed in their attempts to overthrow the ruling British.

The ringleaders of alhambra necklace van cleef replica the rebellions were put to death but 92 men involved were sentenced to transport to Van Diemen's Land.

Canada's Acting High Commissioner in Australia Charles Reeves said the rebels fought for greater self determination.

"One of the things they were arguing for was more responsible government, having their own say in how the colonies were governed and basically started an armed rebellion," he said.

I think it just illustrates the breadth and depth of the Australia Canada relationship and how far back it goes.

Three ships carrying the group reached Hobart in 1840 but one man died on the voyage.

Hobart Lord Mayor Sue Hickey joined Mr Reeves in unveiling the monument's new location.

Alderman Hickey said the monument was significant because it was important to remember the history of the men.

"These people were exiled mainly because of their political beliefs and they were sent out here, way across the seas to this land they'd never heard of, and sent to work and to build things for our city," she said.

Most of the convicts sent from Canada were actually Americans and many were eventually pardoned by Canadian colonial powers and returned to the northern hemisphere.

There are some descendants who live in Australia, however, and they were at the rededication ceremony in Hobart.

Maureen Polley is one of those descendants and travelled from Wollongong in New South Wales to honour her great grandfather Ira Polley.

"He was only 19," she said.

"[He] probably thought this was a bit of an adventure and was caught up in this rebellion."

Mr Reeves said the intricate story of the exiled men was not widely known in Canada, but it was an interesting tale of how the two countries are connected.
