New Sustainable Oasis Flows at Brooklyn Botanic Garden

There's now more water alongside the plants and flowers at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden, but it is actually part of an effort to conserve copy van cleef clover earrings water. NY1's Roger Clark filed the following report.

One last bucket of water is dumped into the newest feature at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. One of its biggest supporters, Shelby White, was there to do the honors.

"The Brooklyn Botanic Garden is one of the jewels of Brooklyn. I've known it since I was a child. And I'm really thrilled at we are involved in this project," White said.

Called The Shelby White and Leon Levy Water Garden, it is a new attraction in the south portion of the garden, part of a $17.2 million project that has included a new Children's Discovery Garden and entrance at Flatbush Avenue. You have to come to the discovery garden now. And we are hoping this water garden will function the same way," said Scott Medbury, president of the Brooklyn Botanic Garden.

But it's more than just a pretty pond and brook with native plants and wildlife. It massively cuts down the amount of fresh water the garden uses by re circulating it.

"Previously, we were here throwing 21 million gallons of drinkable water into the storm system annually. And that's 96 percent erased through this project," said Michael Van Valkenburgh of Michael Van Valkenburgh and Associates.

The design even incorporates computers and weather forecasting to reduce runoff from the garden that winds up in the sewer system during heavy rainfalls, part of the effort to cut down on sewage overflows into the city's waterways.

"Through satellite technology and van cleef and arpels earrings replica predictive modeling, understand when a rain event might occur. And we are able to drop the water level that you see here and then use that space that we have created to handle the stormwater," said van cleef & arpels necklace replica Matt Bird, senior associate with Michael Van Valkenburgh Associates.

The folks at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden are hoping that parks and gardens around the country will take a look at what they are doing here and perhaps implement similar systems so they can help with the conservation effort.
