40 watches and he's still late

"But man, you'll really love this not one of them has the right time.

"Not one! I'm serious. I have to ask someone if I want to know what time it is. To me they're like trinkets. I wear them as such."

Even so, Usher insists, "I didn't start collecting watches just to show that I'd arrived. The first love ring CARTIER copy ones I got were ones I received as gifts. Before I knew it, they just became a passion.

Usher Raymond, 29, is one of the biggest R superstars of all time with album sales of over 30 million worldwide

"The very first one I got was a baby Cartier Santos from (producer) Jermaine Dupri. It was after I had a No 1 with You Make Me Wanna in

1997. It was all metal with no diamonds. Over time I got into makes such as Breitling and Rolex.

"Actually, Rolex was the first make I went to, because it represented success. You get a Rolex, put diamonds in it and you're balling," he says, which one can assume is generally a good thing.

"But to be honest with you, I primarily stay away from diamonds. Occasionally it's cool to give your timepiece a little flash and wear something with diamonds in it, but I don't like it and I don't need it. I get more value in a watch's weight."

That he's not overly keen on diamonds is something Usher should probably have told his friend Damon Dash, since a few years ago Dash's luxury watch company Tiret designed a watch for Usher featuring his own face made up of an astonishing 1,106 of them.

The timepiece, estimated to be worth around 1 million, was briefly displayed at London's Natural History Museum, but now nestles with Usher's other watches in his jewellery drawer at his home near Atlanta, Georgia.

"It's a one of a kind piece," he admits coolly, "and though it didn't cost 1 million, I'll probably be auctioning it one day for that.

'In New York, everything was available drugs, women,' says Usher

"Damon came to me with the concept, and the picture of me was taken from the album cover of Confessions. It was an amazing gift and, believe it or not, I've even worn it out a few times.

"I'm always trying to get my wife Tameka to wear it, but she refuses because I let another girl wear it once. though we won't get into that," he adds quickly.

Today, Usher Raymond is running late, very late a delicious irony considering he collects watches as a hobby.

But then when you're one of the biggest selling R superstars of all time, unexplained tardiness is one of the unspoken perks of the job.

He has arrived at LA's opulent Beverly Wilshire hotel accompanied by the customary army of stylists, hair and make up artists, publicists and security guards.

His baby face features suggest a man much younger than his 29 years, but don't be fooled: having been taken under the love ring CARTIER high wing of P Diddy, no less, as a mere 15 year old, there is nothing childlike about him.

When he sweeps into a room, he silently sheds members of his retinue and sizes it up without making eye contact with anyone. It's a masterful display of modern superstardom. It spawned hits such as Yeah, Burn and Confessions Part II, which simultaneously made the Top Ten singles chart a feat achieved only twice before, by the Beatles and the Bee Gees.

High on the magnitude of love ring A A CARTIER such success, Usher was given to utterances such as, "There were four Beatles and three Bee Gees, but there is only one Usher", and reminded of his remarks today, he can only grin semi bashfully.

"I did say that, didn't I?" he says, nodding his head slowly.

"But I stand by that, in the best possible way. All those people made music that was a sign of the times with a meaningful message, and I want people to be inspired by my music in the same way."

As a people, we expect certain things from our R stars self aggrandisement, ostentatiousness and a healthy love of bling and in Usher, we are truly blessed.

Worth an estimated 50 million, he makes no secret of the fact that he loves the finer things in life. His home contains four rooms dedicated just to clothing, and he owns a staggering 4,000 pairs of shoes. Not to mention his extraordinary collection of watches.

While Tameka Raymond, Usher's wife of nine months, may feel shy about wearing his most expensive bauble, it was she who inadvertently encouraged his watch obsession.
