everything we know about Cersei's naked walk of shame

It was based on a real life historical case

Many Game of Thrones viewers will have been shocked by the brutal punishment endured by Cersei (Lena Headey) in the season five finale earlier this week. Shorn and stripped, the fallen queen was made to walk naked through the streets of King's Landing, after confessing to adultery with her cousin Lancel.

"Jane Shore, mistress of King Edward IV, was punished that way after Edward died," he explained. "It wasn a punishment ever inflicted on men. It was a punishment directed at women to break their pride. And Cersei is defined by her pride."

Jane Shore herself, alhambra knock off bracelet van cleef, it transpires, was in fact named Elizabeth Shore (the name "Jane" appears to be a mistake, passed down through history after it was invented by a playwright in the 17th century).

A notably beautiful woman (according to contemporary accounts), she was mistress to not just the King, but to several other noblemen. But when Edward died, in 1483, he was succeeded by his brother Richard, who initially ruled as Lord Protector but later became Richard III and who was none too fond of Shore.

Accused by the new monarch of conspiracy and promiscuity, the former king's mistress, who would have been in her late 30s at the time, was forced to carry out a walk of penance through the streets of London, before being sent to Ludgate prison.

Unlike her fictional counterpart, however, Shore was at least permitted to wear her undergarments during the walk. She also seems to have been a lot luckier than Cersei. Despite being sent to prison, she was later released, after the King's Solicitor General, Thomas Lynom, fell in love with her; she ended up living out the rest of her life as a relatively "respectable" married woman.

Of course, as Headey herself pointed out during a recent interview with Entertainment Weekly, the horrific scenes shown in the episode also have more modern day parallels.

Game of Thrones: Mother's Mercy, talking points

Game of Thrones: Mother's Mercy, season 5, episode 10, review: 'powerful and sad'

Lena Headey ate pizza while filming it

Portraying a broken, humiliated woman, brought to her lowest point, but desperately trying to hold herself together for the sake of her children, can't be easy. It's small wonder, then, if Headey felt in need of sustenance during filming.

Luckily, snacks were at hand: according to Entertainment Weekly, who visited the Game of Thrones set in Dubrovnik, Croatia, while the walk was being filmed, Headey "munched on a slice of pizza between takes". We're just impressed she only needed one slice.

The body double was 'fantastic' .

By now, almost everyone knows that a body double was used during the Walk of Shame, to portray Cersei during some of the fully nude shots. The identity of the double herself was initially mystery, but she has now been named online as the 27 year old British American actress Rebecca Van Cleave.

During an interview with Vulture, actress Hannah Waddingham, who played the Septa who accompanied Cersei on her walk, spoke about Van Cleave's performance.

"Our fantastic body double was just so brave," she said. "I had a lot of respect for her."

While Headey may have been pregnant at the time of filming (accounting for her reluctance to appear fully nude herself). Waddingham also hinted that the actress's extensive tattoos may been one of the reasons behind the use of a double, bracelet van cleef knock off alhambra. (We're sure the High Sparrow would approve.)

After engaging in some pretty tense negotiations, van cleef knock off clover bracelet, and eventually agreeing to a shift in location, the crew were eventually allowed to film. But, thanks to all the extra security, extras, and special permits required, the four day shoot ended up costing $50,000 a day.

Spiders are scarier than Jonathan Pryce

In an interview with Variety, Headey was asked about filming her pivotal confession scene, which takes place ahead of the walk of shame, and during which her character attempts to elicit mercy from Jonathan Pryce's High Sparrow by admitting to some of her crimes (specifically, the adultery, rather than the incest and murder).
