Former England cricketer Freddie Flintoff and darts stars Eric Bristow and Cliff Lazarenko were among 300 friends and relatives who packed the parish church in Pudsey, West Yorks, Sid's home town.
Although he gained a degree in modern history at Cambridge University it was his love of the game of darts that gained him an worldwide audience.

Barry Hearn, chairman of the Professional Darts Corporation told the congregation: "Sid took a pub game and made it into a global phenomenon.
"He was a great man and millions turned on to hear him speak. Sid Waddell was a legend.

He leaves wife Irene, 68, and children Dan, Charlotte, Lucy, Emma and Nicholas.
After hearing of his death, Stephen Fry, who once shared the commentary box with Sid, tweeted: "Farewell Sid Waddell: Cambridge educated but always loyal to darts and his beloved NE: master of the wild epithet the true voice of darts."
He was cremated at a family service before the funeral service took place.
His son Dan, told the mourners: "He burned very brightly and it feels very, very dark now that he has gone.
"He was no angel and could get emotional but as a dada and grandad he was brilliant.
"He was a more like a mate. I could talk to him about anything."
He also revealed some "unique" advice his dad gave him when he was ten; 'never trust a man who doesn't drink.'
And told how his dad was proud he had never eaten yoghurt as it was "the embodiment of all that was bourgeois."
