VANCOUVER -- Even after going down to 10 men with the score tied 1-1, the Vancouver Whitecaps kept pressing for a winner that looked inevitable. Solomon Thomas Jersey . Then one of Major League Soccers most ruthless goal poachers made the most of his only real chance of the night. Erick Torres headed home the winner off a pinpoint cross from Marky Delgado in the 81st minute Saturday as Chivas USA downed the frustrated Whitecaps 3-1. Second-half substitutes Nigel-Reo Coker and Darren Mattocks both had great chances to give Vancouver the lead after Whitecaps defender Jordan Harvey was sent off in the 69th minute, but neither man could find the range, leaving the door open for Torres winner. The 21-year-old Mexican has now scored in five straight games for Chivas (6-7-5), which picked up its fourth straight victory and is unbeaten in six. "The boys a good player. Torres, make no doubt about it," said Whitecaps head coach Carl Robinson. "We had three defenders in the box. It was a super cross but we cant give him opportunities because hell take them and thats what he did." Vancouver did a good job containing Torres until that critical moment, which made the end result even more maddening. "He spins off one time and makes a good header and scores the goal that kills us a little bit," said Ousted. "Im disappointed conceding that kind of goal." Despite being down a man, the Whitecaps had great chances to grab a winner of their own before that goal, but Reo-Coker missed a sitter in the 74th minute before Mattocks failed to connect moments later in front of Chivas goalkeeper Dan Kennedy. "Another day that could have gone in," Reo-Coker said of his opportunity that flashed just wide. "Obviously it didnt go in today and thats that. We still had some other chances but this is going to be a tough game to swallow. "I think we have to be proud of how we played and performed. Even after going down to 10 men we probably had the two best chances in the whole game." Torres, meanwhile, now has 13 goals on the season for a Chivas team that has scored just 20 times. Agustin Pelletieri and Leandro Barrera had the other goals for the visitors, while Carlyle Mitchell scored his first in MLS for Vancouver (6-4-7). "Disappointed. Gutted is another word," said Ousted. "I said before the game we shouldnt take this lightly. I dont think we did but we didnt get the result." Vancouver led 1-0 at half-time but allowed a free header off a corner to Pelletieri two minutes after the break before things went from bad to worse when Harvey was sent off by referee Armando Villarreal in the 69th minute for his two-footed challenge on Chivas midfielder Oswaldo Minda. Harvey had already left the locker-room by the time it was opened to the media. "I think we started slow at the start of the second half," said Robinson. "That was probably the disappointing thing from the game because I didnt feel under any threat really in the first half. The 10 minutes after halftime is big in any game and they got the goal and got the bit between their teeth." Vancouver will be disappointed with the dropped points at B.C. Place Stadium after a strong showing in last weeks 1-0 victory over the Seattle Sounders. "Ive said all along youve got to win at home and pick up points on the road," said Robinson. "I just said to them in there we just need to try and win an extra away game now." After Torres nosed his team in front, Vancouver had one last gasp in stoppage time, but Villarreal gave a free kick to Chivas after Pedro Morales poked a shot past Kennedy that the keeper had a hand on just in front of the goal-line. Barrera then scored on a rush with the last kick of the game after the Whitecaps sent Ousted forward on a corner. "It was a very tough game," said Chivas head coach Wilmer Cabrera. "Difficult team, quick, with young players with quick transition. "We didnt lose our composure. For the second half we tried to adjust a few movements -- try to move the ball a little bit wider, try to move the ball a little bit quicker." Things started brightly for Vancouver on the night, with Mitchells header from six yards out in the 27th minute marking not only a personal milestone, but also the Whitecaps first goal off a corner in 2014. Robinson had talked about wanting a quick start, like the one the Whitecaps got against Seattle seven days earlier, but Vancouver couldnt get anything going until about 10 minutes into Saturdays match. Once the Whitecaps got their legs moving in midfield they started to boss the game, but were unable to find that final pass, which would eventually cost them. "I wont fault any of my players today because they performed what I asked, they did everything I asked," said Robinson. "Obviously we came out on a bad result." Mitchell has found a home in Vancouvers starting lineup in recent weeks with the injuries to captain Jay DeMerit and Andy OBrien in the heart of the Whitecaps defence. The 26-year-old from Trinidad and Tobago -- who started his fourth game of the season -- has been with Vancouver since 2011, but was making just his 24th MLS appearance for the club on Saturday. Reuben Foster Womens Jersey . - A week after a late-game debacle on defence, the Pittsburgh Steelers showed they can finish.CANTON, Ohio - Andre Williams ran up some big numbers at Boston College. The fourth-round draft pick is showing glimpses that can do it for the New York Giants, too. Williams had seven carries for 48 yards and scored on a 3-yard run in a 17-13 victory over the Buffalo Bills on Sunday night in the preseason-opening Hall of Fame Game. "It gives me confidence. I feel like Im supposed to be here," said Williams, who led the nation with 2,177 yards rushing last season. "Im part of the team now." And a more important part with David Wilson sidelined after sustaining his second neck injury in less than a year. Filling the No. 2 spot behind newly acquired starter Rashad Jennings, the Heisman Trophy finalist helped provide the Giants re-tooled backfield a 1-2 punch. "I though he played well, and that was encouraging," coach Tom Coughlin said. "David Wilsons injury not-withstanding, its very important to us no matter what, because you need a natural rotation." Williams score, which came after a 21-yard scamper off left tackle, put the Giants up 7-3 late in the first quarter. Rookie receiver Corey Washington scored the go-ahead touchdown on a 73-yard pass up the right sideline from backup Ryan Nassib with 13:18 remaining. Washington reached back to catch the partly under-thrown pass, then stepped around flat-footed defender Kamaal McIlwain. Nassib, competing for the backup spot, went 7 of 12 for 139 yards. Starter Eli Manning played three series, and finished 6 of 7 for 43 yards, but lost a fumble. For Buffalo, starting quarterback EJ Manuel had several lapses during two series. He completed just 2 of 7 attempts for 19 yards, and nearly had a pass intercepted by linebacker Jacquian Williams inside the New York 10. Manuel never looked off his intended target Sammy Watkins and was fortunate to have Williams bat the ball down. "I would have liked to throw a touchdown pass or to score a touchdown while I was in, but its our first game," said Manuel, the second-year player who has been inconsistent through the first two weeks of training camp. "We goot our feet wet, and were looking forward to moving on to playing Carolina. "Weve got to get better, all of them." Bills backup Jeff Tuel hit Robert Woods for a 2-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal to put Buffalo ahead 10-7 early in the second quarter. Tuel finished 12 of 17 for 74 yards and an interception. Watkins, the Bills first-round pick, was held without a catch after being targeted three times. Two passes from Manuel directed Watkins way were tipped. Manuel also was late in finding Watkins flying up the left sideline, and overthrew him by a few yards. It was a disappointing debut for Watkins, who had made numerous highlight-reel catches during the first two weeks of training camp. Dan Carpenter made two field goals, including a 51-yarder. New Yorks Brandon McManus hit a 47-yard field goal The Bills are coming off a 6-10 season in which they extended their playoff drought to 14 seasons — the NFLs longest active streak. The Giants (7-9) had a busy off-season attempting to restock a team that has missed the playoffs in four of the past five seasons. The NFL unveiled a few new wrinkles that will run through the first two weeks of the preseason. New Yorks Josh Brown hit two and Carpenter hit his extra-point attempt, all of which were snapped from the 15-yard line rather than the 2. Coaches and players on the sidelines also had the opportunity to view pictures of plays on tablets and in colour — an improvement over the black-and-white still photos that were printed off on paper. The game was played a day after the seven-member 2014 class was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
