It's hard to imagine a man in today's jeans and hoodie world dressing on a daily basis with the flair of a 1950s Hollywood screen idol. The late San Francisco philanthropist, vintner and Faberg objects collector John Traina was among the few dapper dressers in America during the past century, from Baron Alexis de Red to New York socialite to jeweler , who did just that and knew how to use unusual and precious accessories to accent any outfit, whether for a black tie gala or an afternoon lunch, and make it look like an afterthought.

Traina, who died earlier this year, left a wealth of treasures so vast that even eight children can't use them all. They've decided to spread the love of adornment, so to speak, by putting a portion of their father's collectibles up for bid Dec. 7 at

The sale, to be titled "The : A Portrait in Style," will contain 92 lots, some with multiple items, consisting of cuff links and studs (known as "dress sets") and cigarette cases, created by famous makers from the Art Deco period through today and ranging in value from $5,000 to $30,000 each.

The event is considered unusual in the auction world because nearly all single owner sales consist of objects owned by women, Sotheby's replica van cleef and arpels diamond necklace officials said.

Traina's cigarette cases "are really small works of art," Hubbard said, with signature pieces from VCA, Tiffany, Schlumberger, Cartier and Verdura.

"We love the idea of sharing them with the world, and sharing our memories of the kind of man seldom seen anymore.
