The University Teacher Training School in Joensuu is training school of
the Philosophical Faculty. The schools offer pre-primary, basic and – in
the case of Joensuu – also upper secondary school education. The
University Teacher training Schools' special mission is to offer teacher
students the facilities they need for completing guided training that
is part of their pedagogic studies and also to participate in the

The University Teacher Training School provides a diverse environment for researchers interested in questions of pedagogy, didactics, learning and education. The schools are also engaged in research, experiment and development activities of their own. The research of teaching, studying and guided training is a prerequisite for developing research-based guided training, teaching and continued education of teachers. The Teacher Training School in Joensuu also participate in many nationwide projects organised by the Finnish National Board of Education.

The University Teacher Training School in Joensuu is a training school of the Philosophical Faculty. It offers basic education and upper secondary school education. The school's facilities are among the most modern of any teacher training school in Finland.
In all its activities the school appreciates the importance of open interaction, of learning of all its pupils and students, of the individual responsibility of each pupil and student and of a forward-looking, future-oriented ethos. The school is responsible for most of the guided training of class and subject teacher students and partly for the guided training in the education of special education teachers and career counsellors. In accordance with the Universities Act, the school also contributes to the development of teacher education.

The most recent objective of research, experiment and development is the research-based pedagogic application of information technology in upper secondary school education. For this reason all first year students and all teachers have been given tablet computers. This project is one of a kind in the Finnish upper secondary school education, and it is pursued in wide-ranging cooperation with the university and other schools engaged in similar projects.
