Fire investigators with the Millcreek Township Police Department are investigating the cause of a fire that gutted the space housing the Imperial China Buffet at 5138 Peach St. and damaged other space in the plaza. There were no injuries in the fire and no firefighters were reported hurt in putting out the fire.

The fire was reported at about 7 a.m. Tuesday. The first fire departments to arrive on scene found heavy smoke and fire in the Imperial China Buffet. Firefighters were initially able to enter the business to fight the fire but were later pulled out for safety reasons because of damage the fire had caused to the structure, said Dan Hesch, assistant chief of the Kearsarge Fire Department.Thick, heavy smoke that poured from the building shrouded parts of Peach Street and neighboring streets for a time. Peach Street was closed in all directions between Washington Avenue and Dudley Street in Millcreek, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation, with southbound traffic rerouted at West Grandview Boulevard. Peach Street reopened to traffic shortly before 11 a.m. Tuesday.

Saint George Catholic School, which is located near the retail plaza, was closed on Tuesday because of the fire, according to a spokeswoman for the Catholic Diocese of Erie.

All of Millcreek’s volunteer fire departments were called to fight the fire and were assisted by crews from numerous other area departments, including an engine from the Erie Bureau of Fire.
