ASN's decision came after EDF notified last month "a significant safety event," related with risk of failure of a part of the embankment of the Donzere-Mondragon canal with regard to the most severe earthquakes studied in the nuclear safety case.

The nuclear safety watchdog considered that the collected elements provided by EDF "are unable to rule out the risk in the short term."

Furthermore, it noted that the resulting flooding could lead to a nuclear fuel melt accident in the nuclear plant's four reactors and would make it particularly difficult to implement on-site and off-site emergency management resources.

As a result, EDF, the country's leading company which operates nuclear facility, has been asked to conduct more geotechnical investigations in a bid to have further details on the composition of the concerned embankment before the reactors are restarted.

In a press release, EDF said it would implement ASN decision "without undue delay," although it found unnecessary to close them over the works' period.

WELLINGTON, Dec. 10 (Xinhua) -- A growing number of international visitors in October help to drive up guest nights in New Zealand's accommodation sector by 7.3 percent, the government statistics agency announced Wednesday.

Overall guest nights were up 7.3 percent from October last year, making it the seventh straight month of rises, according to Statistics New Zealand.

Domestic guest nights were up 5.1 percent and international guest nights were up 11.3 percent, business indicators manager Neil Kelly said in a statement.

For the year ended October, national guest nights were up 5.5 percent from the previous October year.

International visitor arrivals at 210,600 in October were up 15, 600 year on year, driven by arrivals from China (up 6,000), Australia (up 4,400), the United States (up 2,100) and Japan (up 1, 100).

The figure was the second highest for an October month, after 2011 when numbers were boosted by the Rugby World Cup.
