They also insisted that only a small 0.35 percent of voters faced difficulties because they were not correctly registered in the voters' list.

Verifying voters' lists has become a major contention point in the Maldivian election with two candidates insisting that they have not been able to completely check and sign off on the voter' s list as per a Supreme Court order.

A previous attempt to hold elections on October 19 was derailed on voters' list issues and in the latest development second placed presidential candidate Abdulla Yameen has decided to pull out of a crucial second round run off on Sunday due to unverified lists.

"Despite a few isolated cases of reported violence (1.8 percent) at the polling stations, we are happy to report that this election has been peaceful. Where there were incidents of violence,they were reported to the relevant authorities, and we will be closely monitoring any further developments," Transparency Maldives spokesman Aiman Rasheed said.

Candidates were well-represented during the counting, making the process transparent and adding to its credibility, he added.

Former President Mohammad Nasheed emerged as the winner of Saturday's polls bagging 46 percent of the vote while Yameen managed 30 percent.

However, Yameen has already insisted he will not take part in the second round run off on Sunday due to what he claims are irregularities in the voters list.

Nasheed has appealed for intervention from the international community to hold the run-off as scheduled.

A new president has to be sworn in on November 11 to avoid a Constitutional crisis but the Supreme Court on Saturday ordered outgoing President Waheed to remain in office until a new Head of State is elected.

Analysts' fear that a postponement of the second round will result in Maldives falling into deeper political disorder, which was triggered when Nasheed was controversially ousted from power in 2012 in what he alleges was a coup.
