RIO DE JANEIRO， Sept. 7 (Xinhua) -- More than 4，400 athletes from 160 countries and regions will compete at the Rio Paralympic Games， which officially opened at the Maracana Stadium on Wednesday.

The figure includes two refugees， who will participate under the International Paralympic Athletes flag， the International Paralympic Committee (IPC) said on Wednesday.

Of the 4，432 athletes registered for the September 7-18 Games， a record 1，621 are women - 12% more than London four years ago and more than double the number that participated in Atlanta 20 years ago.

The overall number of athletes in Rio eclipses the 4，302 participants that took part in London and the 3，951 who were registered in Beijing in 2008.

The high participation level comes despite the late withdrawals of Comoros and Liberia， and the absence of Russia.

IPC president Philip Craven said organizers had overcome many obstacles， such as budget cuts and slow early ticket sales amid Brazil's worst recession in decades.

""Two weeks ago I said we faced unprecedented circumstances and since then we've seen unprecedented teamwork，"" Craven told a news conference.

""The feeling coming out of the athletes village is that athletes are happy. The thing to remember is athletes perform best when they are happy and I only saw happy athletes in the village， and that's all right for me.""

Since the Olympic Games closing ceremony on August 21， ticket sales have risen from 300，000 to almost 1.7 million， Craven said.

Organizers are now hoping the to overtake the 2.4 million tickets sold at the Beijing 2008 Games.

""These are going to be the people's Games. You cannot come to a more passionate country for sport， but you've got to engage with the hearts，"" Craven said.

""I think that we've seen from the massive increase in the ticket sales that the Cariocas [Rio residents] and the Brasileiros are ready for these Games and they want more after the Olympics and they particularly want to see the Brazilian athletes.""

""It's always very very important to have a highly successful national team coming from the country where the Games are taking place.""

Craven said a record 1，500 athletes would be tested for doping during the Rio Paralympics.

The Games will be broadcast to 154 countries and regions - 39 more than in London.

In 鈥淢ission: Impossible 鈥?Ghost Protocol,鈥?the fourth installment in the film鈥檚 franchise, Tom Cruise returns as Ethan Hunt who, when the IMF is implicated in a global terrorist plot and shut down, goes under cover and off the grid with his team (Jeremy Renner, Paula Patton and Simon Pegg) to clear the organization鈥檚 name.

The film鈥檚 stars, director Brad Bird and other special celebrity guests will be on hand for live interviews with hosts Quddus and Carla Lamarca. Viewers will also have the opportunity to ask cast and crew members questions via Livestream鈥檚 chat function while experiencing highlights from the film鈥檚 global tour.

Developer Funtactix has announced that its Facebook Mission Impossible Facebook video game will get an expansion called Ghost Protocol that will be linked to the upcoming movie with the same name that will be launched in the middle of December.

The content is created by the developers with direct input from Paramount Pictures and will allow players to experience a story that comes ahead of the events seen in the movie, meeting characters and using gadgets from the film.

There are 40 new missions for players to enjoy, experience and complete, with 20 new characters to interact with and develop.

Mission Impossible also gets new weapons and new gadgets, 20 of them, that will both boost stats for character and will offer new abilities.

The game also delivers a new boss fight that will challenge the special operations abilities of all those engaged with the Mission Impossible video game.

Paramount has released two new clips for Mission: Impossible 鈥?Ghost Protocol. The primary purpose seems to be to highlight the new character played by Jeremy Renner. In one clip, Renner banters capably with Simon Pegg; in the next, he gets in on the action in a scene aptly titled 鈥淔an Jump.鈥? In the footage we鈥檝e seen so far, Renner fits in well in the Mission: Impossible world. That spells good things for this movie, obviously, but is especially good news since it was rumored early on that Renner may assume the lead in future Mission: Impossible films.

Focusing on the present, Tom Cruise is still the headliner of what looks to be one of the more entertaining releases this holiday season. Paula Patton, Josh Holloway, Michael Nyqvist, Lea Seydoux, and Tom Wilkinson join Renner and Pegg in the supporting cast.
