Two Carbon rescuers to receive national honor

Two Carbon County men who risked their lives to save others have been chosen to receive Carnegie Medals for heroism. Brian Firkal, 27, of Nesquehoning, was honored posthumously. A borough volunteer firefighter and teacher, he drowned a year ago while rescuing a boy in the rough waters off the coast of Ocean City,replica chain love, Md. Patrick Cartier III is a Boy Scout and the son of a Marine. The 13 year old knows how to make a snap decision under pressure, and tonight he will be awarded for doing that when he receives a National Boy Scout Heroism Award at the annual meeting of the Boy Scouts Minsi Trails Council at Lehigh University in Bethlehem. One of the small consolations of the events of Sept. 11, 2001, was the story of heroism by the passengers on the hijacked United Airlines Flight 93 that crashed into a western Pennsylvania field.
