The minister's speech came on the same day when the National Institute of Statistics (INE) revealed Spain's economic activity grew to the highest rate in March since August 2010 due to an increase in the consumption of durable goods.

The INE also revealed on Tuesday that Gross Domestic Product (GDP) grew at an annual rate of 1.2 percent from January to March.

Pires de Lima said these figures were "very important news" and showed "trust" in the economy.

There were "clear signs" that Portugal will experience "a year of growth in 2014, for the first time in several years," he added.

The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development expects the Portuguese economy to grow more than 1.1 percent in 2014.

Portugal recently ended its bailout with a clean exit and the fragile economy is steadily improving, after Portugal emerged last year from the deepest recession since 1970s.

However, the national debt is still at around 130 percent of GDP.
