LUSAKA Air Max Sale , May 30 (Xinhua) -- The Zambian government said on Tuesday that it will not scrap a 10-percent tax slapped on maize export despite concerns from stakeholders.

Farmers and grain traders have asked the government to remove the tax in order to allow the country's maize to be more competitive on the regional market.

Minister of Agriculture Dora Siliya said the government will not scrap the tax as it wanted to encourage the export of maize products such as mealie meal to create jobs for local people.

The government, she said, was encouraging value addition to maize in order to allow export of finished products so that the country could increase revenue.

Exporting raw materials such as maize grains was tantamount to creating jobs in other countries, she added.

The Zambia National Farmers Union (ZNFU), an association representing farmers, and the Grain Traders Association of Zambia (GTAZ) have expressed concern that the tax was a barrier to trade and making the country's maize uncompetitive in the region as it was considered expensive.

HARARE, June 8 (Xinhua) -- At least 43 people died Wednesday evening when a Zambia-bound bus they were travelling in overturned in the Hurungwe area along the Chirundu highway, more than 200 km from Zimbabwe's capital city Harare.

Police spokesperson Charity Charamba told national radio that several other passengers were injured after the bus driver failed to negotiate a curve and hit a tree, resulting in the bus overturning.

Charamba said the driver was probably speeding, given that he failed to negotiate the curve.

She called on authorities to make it mandatory that buses should not travel at night to curb accidents on the country's narrow highways.

President Robert Mugabe recently broke the ground for the dualization of the one of Southern Africa's main trunk roads, the Beitbridge-Harare-Chirundu highway in a development that will make travelling there safer.

Many accidents have occurred on the highway, especially on the Harare-Masvingo-Beitbridge legs, with at least 150 people dying in those involving buses between 2014 and 2016.

The highway was built during the time of the Federation of Rhodesia and Nyasaland (now independent states of Zambia, Zimbabwe and Malawi) between 1953 and 1963 and is part of the North-South Corridor as described by regional economic blocs.

The accident occurred about two months after another 31 passengers died when a South Africa-bound bus side-swiped a haulage truck about 220 km from Harare on the Masvingo Road, causing both vehicles to catch fire. The dead had to be identified through DNA tests after their bodies were burnt beyond recognition.

The prime minister also said that the Indian government remains fully committed to bringing a positive change in the lives of women and urged citizens to walk shoulder-to-shoulder in a bid to end all forms of discrimination or injustice against women.

"My government has initiated several measures aimed at bringing about a positive change in the lives of women. That is central to our vision of India's progress," he said.

RIO DE JANEIRO, Jan. 8 (Xinhua) -- Monday's seventh stage of the Dakar Rally will be cut by half as heavy rain continues to cause havoc in the Bolivian section of the prestigious off-road race.

The La Paz-Uyuni route will be cut to a 161km timed stage with over 600km in liaison, organizers said on Sunday.

The announcement came after Saturday's Oruro-La Paz stage was cancelled and Friday's Tupiza-Oruro leg was shortened due to bad weather.

Defending champion Stephane Peterhansel of France leads the overall standings, one minute and nine seconds ahead of compatriot and fellow Peugeot driver Sebastien Loeb.

Their countryman Cyril Despres - who is also driving a Peugeot - is third, four minutes and 54 seconds off the pace.
