MMOexp Explains: Boosting Storm Charge in Path of Exile 2
Honduras
In Path of Exile 2 (PoE 2), players have access to an immense variety of passive skills, each offering unique benefits that can radically alter the course of POE2 Currency a build. One such skill that stands out is Storm Charge, a passive that gives a significant power boost to elemental damage after landing a critical hit. Whether you’re designing a critical hit-focused build or simply want to enhance your elemental damage, Storm Charge is an essential passive to consider.
Storm Charge is a passive skill in PoE 2 that provides powerful buffs to your character's elemental damage output after you land a critical hit. This skill can either be acquired by allocating skill points on the passive skill tree or by applying it to an amulet via anointment.
When active, Storm Charge grants the following two benefits:
40% increased elemental damage if you’ve dealt a critical hit recently
20% increased critical chance
These two bonuses work in synergy to boost your damage output, especially in builds that focus on critical hits or elemental damage. But the beauty of Storm Charge lies in its versatility—it works for both crit-focused builds and non-crit builds that rely heavily on elemental damage.
The mechanics of Storm Charge are simple but powerful. Here’s how it operates in practice:
Critical Hit Bonus: Storm Charge activates when you land a critical hit, and for the next 4 seconds, you gain a 40% increased elemental damage bonus. This effect applies to all elemental damage, including fire, cold, and lightning, regardless of whether the damage is from a crit or a non-crit hit. This means that even if you’re not landing critical hits all the time, you can still benefit from the damage boost by triggering one every few seconds.
"Recently" Means 4 Seconds: In Path of Exile, the term “recently” refers to a time frame of 4 seconds. For Storm Charge, this means that once you score a critical hit, the 40% bonus is active for the next 4 seconds, giving you a small window to capitalize on the extra elemental damage.
Increased Critical Chance: In addition to the elemental damage boost, Storm Charge also gives you 20% increased critical chance. This benefit is particularly valuable for builds that rely heavily on critical hits to deal significant damage, as it increases your odds of triggering critical strikes and keeping the Storm Charge bonus up consistently.
Why Is Storm Charge Important?
1. Perfect for Hybrid Builds
Storm Charge is ideal for builds that mix elemental damage with critical hits. Players who combine both will find that Storm Charge offers a seamless synergy between the two, enabling you to enhance both your critical hit potential and elemental damage simultaneously. For example, a fireball spellcaster build that utilizes fire damage over time can still benefit from Storm Charge, even if the fire damage itself doesn’t crit.
2. Great for High-Crit Builds
For players focusing on high critical chance and critical damage, Storm Charge is an exceptional addition. It enables players to capitalize on frequent critical hits, boosting their elemental damage each time they land a crit. Since critical hits tend to happen more often in high-crit builds, this ensures that the 40% increased elemental damage bonus is active nearly all the time, massively boosting your overall damage output.
3. Enhanced Elemental Damage without Crit Reliance
Even if you’re not stacking critical chance or crit damage in your build, you can still make the most out of Storm Charge. If your build features a steady way to land critical hits, even intermittently, you can trigger the 40% increased elemental damage bonus. For example, an ignite build with a consistent damage-over-time mechanic might only land occasional crits but still see huge benefits from the bonus, increasing the damage of all your elemental skills for the next 4 seconds.
4. Highly Cost-Effective
Compared to some of the more complex and expensive passive skills or unique items, Storm Charge provides an excellent damage increase without requiring significant investment. Whether you’re placing it on your passive skill tree or applying it to an amulet, Storm Charge delivers a substantial boost without needing to rely on rare or hard-to-find items. It’s an accessible and efficient way to elevate your damage output.
How to Anoint Storm Charge on an Amulet
While you can acquire Storm Charge through the passive skill tree, another option is to anoint it onto your amulet. This allows you to access the skill even if you’ve already allocated your skill points elsewhere, or it can simply serve as an additional damage multiplier when combined with other passive bonuses.
Requirements for the Anointment
In PoE 2, Distilled Emotions are required to anoint a skill onto an amulet, and to anoint Storm Charge, you need a specific combination of them:
Distilled Fear
Distilled Terror
Distilled Envy
These items drop as random rewards from Delirium enemies in Ultimate Delirium maps, but they can also be bought from Alva in your Hideout via the Currency Exchange system. Be mindful that monsters encountered in maps accessed with an Infused Waystone will not drop Distilled Mood, which is used to create Distilled Emotions.
Once you’ve gathered the required Distilled Emotions, here’s how you can infuse your amulet with Storm Charge:
Prepare the Amulet: Place your amulet and the Distilled Emotions in your inventory.
Right-click the Distilled Emotions: Doing so will open the Infusion Window.
Arrange the Items: In the Infusion Window:
Place your amulet in the top slot.
Place the Distilled Emotions in the following order:
Distilled Fear → Distilled Terror → Distilled Envy.
If done correctly, the text box at the bottom of the window should display "Storm Charge".
Complete the Infusion: Click “Infuse” to apply the Storm Charge passive to your amulet. Once this is done, the amulet will grant the Storm Charge bonus whenever you equip it.
Tips for Maximizing the Effectiveness of Storm Charge
To get the most out of Storm Charge, here are some additional tips:
Ensure Consistent Crits: Consider using skills with high crit chance or multiple sources of critical hits. The more frequently you land critical hits, the more often you can trigger the 40% increased elemental damage bonus.
Focus on Elemental Scaling: Pair Storm Charge with other sources of elemental damage scaling, like flasks, passive tree nodes, or gear that increase your fire, cold, or lightning damage. This will make the 40% damage boost even more impactful.
Elemental Ailments Synergy: If you’re focusing on elemental ailments (like Ignite, Chill, or Shock), Storm Charge will amplify the effects of these ailments as well, giving you additional utility on top of raw damage.
Skill Choice: Skills that trigger crits consistently, such as Whirling Blades, Flameblast, or Arc, are ideal choices to maintain the Storm Charge bonus. Build your playstyle around abilities that complement the crit frequency.
In Path of Exile 2, Storm Charge offers a robust and flexible damage boost to any build focused on elemental damage, whether you specialize in critical hits or not. It’s a relatively easy-to-implement passive that scales well with a variety of playstyles, and it can be applied to your amulet to provide additional flexibility without requiring significant passive skill points.
With the right anointment and a good understanding of how to activate it, Storm Charge can be a POE 2 Currency Orbs game-changer in both your mapping and bossing adventures. It’s a reliable choice for enhancing your elemental builds, and its synergy with critical hit builds makes it a top-tier option for maximizing damage output.
