Victoria's Ryan Cochrane honours coach with Pan Am gold

Two time Olympic medallist swimmer Ryan Cochrane of Victoria won his first major Games medal since the death of his coach Bennett this year in Victoria to cancer at 51.

"You fall back to the level of the competition. The world championships [later this summer in Kazan, Russia] are going to be exponentially tougher and I will need to be six seconds faster," noted the starry Islander.

This is the first time Cochrane has competed in the Pan Am Games, an event to which Canada usually sends its "B" teams. But because this is a home Games, Canada is fielding its "A" national teams in most sports. Cochrane is glad he came.

Caldwell, meanwhile, was fifth Friday in the women's 100 metre backstroke.
