Victoria will keep its options open to host the 2022 Commonwealth Games should the bid by Durban, South Africa, go awry.

"Then if it comes to them saying, 'OK, it sounds interesting and we're interested in talking to you,' then that's when we would ask the Commonwealth Games Federation all the hard questions."
Those questions, Helps said, would deal with issues such as security, policing and the need for facility upgrades.
Victoria councillors agreed Helps should write a letter to be signed by local mayors in the capital region to the Games federation offering to host 10 core sports of aquatics (swimming and diving), badminton, field hockey, netball (women), squash, athletics, boxing (men), lawn bowls, rugby sevens (men) and weightlifting, subject to agreement of the allocation of costs.
In addition, Victoria would consider selecting other sports it would host, which likely would include rowing, shooting, table tennis, tennis, gymnastics, wrestling, archery, cycling (road and mountain) and triathlon.
