(Map)Whitsunday was first contested in 1950 and was a safe Country/National seat until the 1989 election. It was a surprise victory for Labor that year when former National Party Minister Geoff Muntz contested the seat as an Independent, splitting the conservative vote and allowing Labor's Lorraine Bird to win by 12 votes. He is a former Commodore of the Whitsunday sailing club and lecturer at the Barrier Reef Institute of Tafe. In the late 1970s he was known as 'Anarchist Dan' and ran Planet Press, publisher of the satirical 'Cane Toad Times', a past that always seemed odd when he was named as the National Party candidate for this seat at the 2004 state election. In the campaign a photo surfaced of a young Van Blarcom attending a Nazi Party meeting in the 1970s, resulting in him being dumped as candidate.
