In recent years, the gallery has pushed up attendance by holding more exhibitions and offering a wider mix thattargetschildren andnon traditional gallery goers. For instance, its growth last year was underpinned by a diverse program that featured the Andy Warhol/Ai Weiwei summer exhibition, the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibitionDegas: A New Vision, andtheSummer Kids Festival, which attracted over 22,000 children in 11 days.
Government figures show that five years ago, the NGV hosted 28 exhibitions a year; last year it featured 49. Mr Foley's funding announcementcomes as the Melbourne Winter Masterpieces exhibition Van Gogh and the Seasons kicks off this Friday.
