Son flies in from Nepal in time for Mother's Day

Erika Van Doormaal of Victoria got the perfect Mother's Day gift on Friday: Her son Keith returned from earthquake devastated Nepal. "I'm over the moon," she said. "I'm just so, so relieved."

Keith Van Doormaal, who was met at Victoria International Airport by his parents and dog, Radar, said he was lucky to be away from the danger zone when Nepal was struck by a 7.8 magnitude earthquake April 25.

The 22 year old was in Nepal to hike, having headed there when another hike in India got snowed out. "You heard some stuff in the hills around, but the fog was pretty heavy so you couldn't see any of the avalanches or anything," he said Friday.

Being so close to a disaster that has so far claimed more than 7,800 lives puts things in perspective, he said. "It makes you want to go do some things that you might put off."

Keith said he has mixed feelings about leaving Nepal behind. "I feel like a bit of a coward for leaving right away."

He now plans to head to Australia for work driving a delivery truck, but hopes to eventually return to the region to do the hike he was planning when the disaster struck. "Going knock off van cleef clover ring hiking there, especially in Nepal, is my favourite thing to do in the world."
