Nothing else is known, other than Blizzard is working on "getting all-new mobile Warcraft content into players' hands for the first time" and it's slated for release in 2022.
Speaking on a call to investors last year, CEO Bobby Kotick said Blizzard had "multiple mobile free-to-play Warcraft experiences" in the works, and that the titles are "in advanced development." The firm feels these titles will "create opportunities for both existing players and new fans to experience the Warcraft universe in entirely new ways.The Warcraft series spans three different genres, and the series is made up of five core games: Warcraft: Orcs and Humans, Warcraft 2: Tides of Darkness, Warcraft 3: Reign of Chaos, World of Warcraft, and Hearthstone.
The first three games in the franchise are real-time strategy titles, the forth title to be released is the MMORPG, and the fifth is a card-battler. It isn't known at present which genre the new Warcraft mobile game will fall into.
The mobile segment of Activision Blizzard does well for the company, so a Warcraft mobile game may indeed bring more folks into the segment's fold. In 2021, over a billion dollars was spent on Call of Duty Mobile and King's Candy Crush is still a major cash cow for the company after all of these years.Diablo Immortal was announced as being in active development during BlizzCon 2018, and last we heard, it is set to to release sometime this year after initally being slated for 2021.
Unfortunatley for Blizzard, the announcement of the title didn't sit too well with fans, who were expecting a more traditional game from the series to be announced. Luckily for them, a year later, Diablo 4 was revealed. Hopefully, news of a Warcraft game coming to mobile will go down better with fans of that franchise.
Between the "multiple" mobile titles in the works and continued support on current offerings, Blizzard seems to be keeping busy. It still has Overwatch 2 in the works and it is also developing a new survival game for PC and consoles.
News of the Warcraft mobile title came during Activision Blizzard's Q4 2021 and year-end financials report overnight, with Blizzard reporting revenue of $419 million. This is a $74 million decline compared to the $493 million reported in Q3 2021. This figure is also down year-over-year by $160 million compared the $579 million reported during Q4 2020. Revenue for the 2021 year as a whole also saw a deline. Growth for World of Warcraft was offset by a decline for other titles and the absence of BlizzCon in the quarter.
Monthy Active Users (MAUs) were also down for Blizzard during the quarter by 2 million to 24 million compared to 26 million in Q3 2021. MAUs were down by 5 million year-over-year compared to the 29 million reported during the quarter ending December 31, 2020.
Specifically, the report stated that Blizzard were working on ‘getting all-new mobile Warcraft content into players’ hands for the first time.’
This was in addition to a statement regarding new experiences in World of Warcraft and Hearthstone being in the works for 2022, suggesting that the all-new mobile content would be a new Warcraft title.World of Warcraft reportedly had ‘its strongest engagement and net bookings (purchases) outside of a Modern expansion year in a decade’. Similarly, Hearthstone purchases were also great year-over-year.
Given the strength of the Warcraft brand, it’s little wonder that another mobile title is on the cards – Hearthstone already has a mobile version, of course.
Other Activision Blizzard franchises are also enjoying solid engagement on mobile. Call of Duty Mobile grew ‘strongly’ in 2021, with spending on the title exceeding a whopping US $1 billion (AU $1.4 billion) worldwide.
When you consider that 2021’s console and PC versions of Call of Duty: Vanguard resulted in declining year-on-year revenue – Vanguard had lower sales than 2020’s Black Ops Cold War, and free-to-play battle royale Call of Duty Warzone saw lower engagement – it tells a very clear story on where the opportunities are for the company.Blizzard is also working on another mobile version of one of their popular franchises in Diablo Immortal, which was met with fan backlash upon its reveal in 2018, but has since garnered positive reviews from its public closed beta tests.
And of course, Activision Blizzard is also parent to mobile company King, known for Candy Crush, which continued to see record growth in 2021.
It's going to be a busy spring for Blizzard, beginning with Hearthstone. The first of three expansions planned for Hearthstone this year will be unveiled on March 15, shortly after which developers will "provide a deeper look into the plans for Hearthstone for 2022—including the annual core set changes."
The reveal of the next World of Warcraft expansion will follow a month later, on April 19. WoW's latest expansion, Shadowlands, pretty much wrapped things up with its last major patch, which rolled out in February.
A month after that, give or take—it's only set for May, with no specific date—the Warcraft mobile game that was revealed in February will be detailed to some greater extent. This is the one that I think is most interesting, at least for now, because Blizzard hasn't revealed anything about what it actually is: As we noted last month, it could be anything from a mobile redo of the original Warcraft RTS to Hearthstone 2, although obviously that's extremely unlikely. Blizzard didn't clarify much with this announcement except to suggest that it will be something entirely new, describing it as "the first game in the Warcraft Universe designed for mobile."
The future of Warcraft is bright," Warcraft general manager John Hight wrote. "On behalf of all of us at Blizzard working to bring even more exciting Warcraft experiences to you, we thank you for being a part of the community. We're excited about the journey in front of us and are grateful that you're joining us for it."
We may have a little more insight into what to look forward to with Hearthstone. Game director Ben Lee outlined some planned changes coming to the game in 2022, including that multiple new card types are on the way. He also announced that he's leaving the Hearthstone team to work on a different, unannounced project within Blizzard.
Through their quarterly financial report, the players will learn that Blizzard has had lower year over year first quarter financial results, this is due to the product cycle timing for the Warcraft franchise. Furthermore, it states that the company "reached important milestones across its key franchises in recent months, and the second quarter represents the start of a period of planned substantial releases across Blizzard’s portfolio".
Then the company goes on to state that Blizzard is constantly working on the Warcraft franchise to please and expand the player base. The company then went on to state that, "The newest Hearthstone? expansion, Voyage to the Sunken City?, launched on April 12. Blizzard’s teams are working on major new content for World of Warcraft? including World of Warcraft: Dragonflight, the innovative upcoming expansion for the modern game, and World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King Classic. Blizzard is also planning to unveil more details about its first Warcraft mobile experience in the coming weeks".
This comes as exciting news for the players as they will now be able to play their beloved game on the go. Many big franchises have ventured into the mobile gaming industry, with a different version of their game or the same game itself. Titles such as COD Mobile, Genshin Impact, Fortnite, and more have ventured into the mobile gaming industry and have made big bucks for themselves. The mobile gaming industry has been flourishing due to the untapped player base and undeniable portability.
It seems like Blizzard will be doing the same and release a mobile version of this iconic game. Developers of Apex and Valorant are also developing mobile versions of these popular games, so it seems like a right time to make this move. The release date for Warcraft Mobile hasn't been provided yet, but an announcement is sure to come in the coming weeks.
Taking this into account, it's not at all surprising that World of Warcraft fans have a very clear idea of what the next expansion might entail, even if it hasn't yet been announced by Blizzard Entertainment. According to the vast assortment of leaks and rumors that came out in the past few months, it is a common belief that the next World of Warcraft expansion is going to be set on the Dragon Isles, and a recent update to Dragonblight's mini-map only further strengthens this idea.
To cut straight to the point: while the mini-map for Dragonblight has indeed been recently updated, there have been no tangible changes to the location compared to a work-in-progress version uploaded to the game's database as far back as 8.2 during Battle for Azeroth. That being said, given that the mini-map for this version of Galakrond's Rest has been regenerated, and comparing it with the previous leaks pertaining to a potential Dragon-themed expansion, there are a lot of coincidences at play.
The main differences this version of Dragonblight has over its predecessor (shown on the right) is that any Titan architecture has been scrubbed out, including the iconic Wyrmrest Temple overlooking the zone. Furthermore, the bones of Galakrond are missing, as well as the Ruby, Bronze, and Obsidian Dragonshrines.
The implications of these omissions point towards a fascinating possibility – a new Caverns of Time instance featuring the defeat of Galakrond by the primordial, early versions of the original Dragon Aspects: Ysera, Nozdormu, Malygos, Alextrasza, and Neltharion. For an expansion allegedly themed around dragons and their future, going back to the past to observe one of the most pivotal moments in their history would be a great concept for World of Warcraft to tackle.
Given the poor reception the ending of Shadowlands received, as well as the fatigue the players have had over World of Warcraft's focus on its cosmic lore, scaling it all back for a simple expansion built around thwarting a resurrected Galakrond could be the breath of fresh air World of Warcraft's story sorely needs.

Even with server queues, New World is already Steam’s most-played new game of 2021. The previous contender, the Swedish Viking simulator Valheim, topped out at just over 500,000 concurrent players in February. At time of writing, SteamDB has pegged New World‘s peak at 707,230.

It’s a slightly strange pick for Amazon, as New World is a massively-multiplayer online role-playing game (MMORPG), a subgenre that’s currently dominated by World of Warcraft and Final Fantasy XIV. As opposed to those two games, however, New World features a real-time combat system, and doesn’t have any sort of character classes.
Instead, your character gains Core Attribute points as you level up, which you can spread out among five primary stats, and you can grind out gathering, crafting, and refining professions as you see fit. Likewise, fighting with any of the weapons in the game slowly earns experience points towards Mastery for that specific weapon. It’s an open-ended approach reminiscent of an Elder Scrolls game.
As a general rule, MMORPGs are some of the hardest games to fairly review. They’re deliberately built as long-lasting time sinks, and many of them change dramatically once you hit their endgame. New World has a level cap of 60, and few if any people will be able to reach that point before this coming weekend. Amazon itself recommends that critics get at least 40 hours deep into New World before trying to write about it, which seems entirely fair.
As such, there aren’t many actual reviews of the game at the moment. There are a few critical previews, such as PCMag’s, but at time of writing, New World‘s Metacritic page is a big fat “to be continued.” A proper critical evaluation (such as our own) is going to have to wait for a bit.
