Dredging Begins to Clean Up Flushing Bay

Starting Wednesday, the NYC Department of Environmental Protection began $34 million dredging project to reduce odors and improve health of Flushing Bay. NY1's Van Tieu filed the following report.

Complaints of a rotten egg smell coming off parts of Flushing Bay are a common occurrence. The odor is coming from the ground below the water, said Pam Elardo, Department of Environmental Protection Deputy of Commissioner for the Bureau of Waste Water Management.

"Sediments over time, either naturally occurring or whatever the case may be, will become anaerobic and you'll get kind of a hydrogen sulfate smell from it,van cleef diamond necklace replica, and that's what happening: the sediments have been sitting there a very long time and that's been causing some odors in the area, van cleef and arpel clover necklace replica," she said.

To combat the nuisance odors, van cleef necklace alhambra replica, the DEP began its $34 million dredging and wetland restoration project Wednesday to improve the health of the natural bay.

They'll be working around the clock. Multiple long reach excavators on floating barges will dredge 91,000 cubic yards of sediment underwater.

That sediment removed will be processed and transported to a disposal site to be recycled for other uses. Delardo says the sediment isn't expected to be toxic.

The area they'll be working on is 17.5 acres, near the abandoned pier off the Flushing Bay Promenade.

The wood pilings that were sticking out from the water were removed last week.

Delardo said the project isn't just meant to make the bay look better and smell better, replica van cleef long necklace, but it's a part of a longer term project to improve the city's waste water system as well. There are two combined sewer outfalls in the bay.

"What we do is keep people safe by taking the waste water from 9 million plus people everyday and treating it to a standard that makes our bays and rivers clean," Delardo said. "The wetlands serves as a filter for storm water and over time what that'll do is create clean water downstream and that's a great enhancement to this project. "
