At Rolex 24, Ucf Students Will Hit The Pit

Last weekend the University of Central Florida's football program got a major shot of prestige when the St. Louis Rams won the Super Bowl. Rams starting center Michael Gruttadauria is a 1995 UCF grad.
This weekend, UCF's engineering department could get a boost. Sunday. The race could cover up to 2,700 miles more than five Daytona 500s.
A cadre of University of Central Florida engineering students will be working on the Gunnar Racing team's pit crew. Six of the students are undergraduates enrolled in the school's mechanical engineering program and members of the Student Society of Automotive Engineers. The other two are graduate students in UCF's unique Precision Engineering of High Performance Engine program.
Gunnar Racing, based in West Palm Beach, will run a Porsche 996 GT3 R, a $200,000 race car that will be piloted by several drivers during the race, including actor Paul Newman. Michael Brockman, a 1975 UCF graduate,van cleef flower knock off necklace, also will be a driver on Kevin Jeannette's team this weekend. Jeannette owns Gunnar Racing as well as a business that restores vintage Porsche race cars.
Most of the UCF students will be on the relief pit crew, meaning they'll fill the fuel tank, change the tires, assist the driver and make repairs and adjustments sometime during the night of the race.
But the two students in the high performance engine program will be wielding some impressive performance equipment of their own: diagnostic computers that can quickly locate problems with the car's engine, electrical or fuel systems.
If the car develops a technical glitch, the UCF students will plug in their computers, download information from the car and suggest ways to make the quickest repair.
Jeannette stocked his pit crew with UCF students because he was impressed with the school's engineering program.
Speaking from his office in West Palm Beach, Jeannette said he visited UCF last year with his 17 year old son,van cleef necklace fake wholesale, Gunnar, who is the team's test driver. Jeannette said he was looking for a university that offered engineering students classes in the design of chassis and engines.

Gunnar will be enrolling at UCF in the fall to study mechanical engineering. But Jeannette says that will be training for his son's goal of becoming a professional race car driver.
The whole idea is to groom him as an engineering type of driver. We are trying to have Gunnar trained as an engineer, which will help his driving skills,'' Jeannette said. If Gunnar Racing does win the Rolex 24 Sunday, there won't be any gold rings. There are small cash prizes awarded to the top finishers, depending on how many cars are entered and the position in which they finish. The pit crew does get paid, but the owner receives a Rolex watch.
