Singing nuns and talking tigers take Madison stages this month

The weather outside is frigid, which means it's exactly the right time to head for a warm theater or cozy gallery and take in some local art.

January's offerings include a national tour of "Sister Act," a portrait of a troubled artistic genius in the Playhouse, a lively musical tribute to Cole Porter and a devastating drama of post invasion life in Iraq.

Also playing are several original pieces: "Portrait of a Dungeon Master" about a dangerous role playing game at Broom Street Theater, Jan. 10 Feb.1; "Love and Trauma" by Nick Schweitzer at the Bartell Theatre, Jan. 10 12, and "Mirror Image," a haunted house/love story at the Janesville Performing Art Center, Jan. 9 12.

"No Child"

To introduce Madison's newest company, New York import Theatre LILA, Jessica Lanius directs "No Child," a semi autobiographical one woman play by Nilaja Sun written in 2006.

A portrait of a teaching artist who attempts to reach underserved Bronx high schoolers, "No Child" runs Thursday through Saturday, Jan. 9 11, in Promenade Hall with Milwaukee actress Marti Gobel playing the role Sun wrote for herself.

A New York Times review of an early production called it "a lightning paced, rolex oyster datejust perpetual imitation, multi character solo play in the style of John Leguizamo" drawing on Sun's eight years in some of New York's toughest schools.

Thursday and Friday, Jan.

"Red, Hot and Cole"

The composer of "Kiss Me, Kate," "Anything Goes" and "High Society" gets his musical due in "Red, Hot and Cole," produced by Madison Theatre Guild, Jan. 10 25.

Christopher Younggren stars as Cole Porter, with Rachel Eve Holmes playing his Southern debutante wife, Linda (a Porter themed musical focusing on her story, "Love, Linda," recently closed in New York). Noel Coward, Dorothy Parker and Ethel Merman make appearances, too.

An upbeat songbook revue, "Red,replica rolex gmt ii, Hot Cole" includes hummable classics like "I Get a Kick Out of You,rolex oyster perpetual day date replica," "Everytime We Say Goodbye" and "Don't Fence Me In."

"Sister Act"

Whoopi Goldberg spiced up the convent in the 1992 comedy "Sister Act," which joined the movies to musicals trend in 2006 when it debuted in Pasadena, Calif. tour in fall 2012.

"Sister Act" follows nightclub singer Deloris Van Cartier who, after witnessing her gangster boyfriend take out a "squealer," goes into hiding among the nuns of The Holy Order of the Little Sisters of Our Mother of Perpetual Faith. There she transforms the choir, and herself, with a sparkly nun's habit and some fabulous high notes. opens on Jan. 16. "Red," which is among the top 10 most produced plays by regional theaters this season, paints a portrait of the mercurial artist Mark Rothko (DeVita) as he creates abstract murals for the Seagram Building works of art he eventually decided to keep, returning the money from the commission.

In a 77 Square review of the Goodman Theatre production in Chicago in 2011, I wrote that "Logan's intense, two player drama is as much about what we hear and feel as it is about colors on canvas."
