Beware the images in gardening magazines

Gardening magazines can mess with your mind.

They're filled with images of perfect gardens frozen in a golden moment of time. But those gardens have been fluffed, flattered and posed for that exact second when the photographer snaps the shutter, belying the truth that gardening is a continual series of circular processes with riotous twists, turns and curveballs thrown by nature.

A steady diet of beautiful garden photography will convince you that there is a goal to work toward in the garden an image to be achieved, some kind of end result we should be striving for. But the essence of gardening, the joy, is in the doing (gardening is a verb after all).

We didn't see the herd of gophers and flotilla of snails that showed up the next day or the frost that hit, the mildew that descended, or the blackberry that overtook the rosebush.

Even if we could exclude the mayhem, the natural life cycle of plants has them living and dying on all kinds of discordant schedules annually, biannually, five or 10 knock off classic cartier ring years, over 1,500 for a redwood.

The change is constant and if those magazines had any heart, they'd show us not only the perfect moment photo, but the before, during, after and long after picture, too, as a reminder that the garden is constantly in change. Viewing our gardens as a continuing process gives the whole affair a spaciousness you don't get when you practice goal oriented gardening.

It means you can put just about anything off until tomorrow and if it doesn't get done this year, there's always the next. Knowing that gardening is a path with no destination and that it's all about the path itself is like taking off your office clothes and putting on your sweatpants. It's liberating.

OK, focusing on the process is a nice '80s way of saying that it's all about doing the work at hand. But for those of us on the lazier side, there very often is no joy in work.

To a slacker, there are days when gardening chores make painting the bathroom seem like a relaxing, leisurely alternative. All we men cartier love ring replica want to do is sit in the cosmos and watch our garden grow. Those are the days when you need to redefine your standards and embrace the oxalis, or decide to grow only half your garden, or forget the whole damn thing for a while, have a beer and cultivate the wild look.

But who's kidding whom? It's not that easy to let go and live for the now. We've been well trained to get things done. But if we focus on the doing, the background that represents tomorrow (and a goal) becomes hazy and less prominent.

Concentrating on today's garden can be as self revealing as any meditative practice and you'll quickly learn your tolerance level for weeds. You'll also discover how patient or impatient you are.

And you may be pleasantly surprised to see that you do indeed like work when copy men cartier love ring it's free of the strictures of time and expectation. Or that you really do know how to relax and appreciate the beauty of the rose and blackberry as they merrily intertwine.

When you're not rushing your garden, which is often a consequence of striving to achieve, you can be more observant and better acquainted with your plants and their needs. And you'll be better able to appreciate a plant during all its growing stages, rather than impatiently tapping your foot until it grows big enough to fill that space and complete your look.

In fact, if you really embrace this be here now idea, you'll never spend the money for a gallon plant again. Watching the four incher grow becomes part of the entertainment. Hell, it's practically your religion now.

We garden for myriad reasons and with as many styles. No one is better than another, it's just that some are more relaxing. Photographic images can overwhelm us with their perfect moment in time precision, which negates the profound, fundamental fact that the garden is perpetually transitory.

And we might as well jump on and go along for the ride because that's a whole lot more fun than trying to drive.
