Never mind the movies

Never mind the lithe bodies and crease free faces of their younger counterparts, it was the actresses in the over 40 age group who stole the show at the Golden Globes on Sunday night.

Admittedly, Helen Mirren and Annette Bening both looked as though they had just been discharged from a geriatric ward where spending cuts meant the one comb only had two teeth left.

But step forward Halle Berry, who looked simple and sexy in a black corset dress, Jane Fonda, who proved that black doesn't have to look ageing, and Michelle Pfeiffer, whose ethereal beauty replica hermes tote bags put the likes of Transformers actress Megan Fox who had been poured into a pink and silver Armani in the shade.

While best actress winner Natalie Portman looked breathtakingly beautiful in a rose pink empire gown, she was hardly up there with Elizabeth Taylor in her prime.

Many of the new young stars, such as Michelle Williams and Scarlett Johansson, made the same mistake looking old before their time in super conservative choices.

Too many wore dresses that were badly fitting, gaping at the neckline and the back and, of course, the shoes were high enough to give them altitude sickness.

And perhaps the biggest disappointment of the night was Angelina Jolie, whose incredible figure was shrouded from head to toe (doesn't she realise her job is to be a modern day Ava Gardner?).

The red carpet was awash with pink and green, there were no prints to be seen, and the asymmetric, one shouldered gown was the night's most popular silhouette.

My main gripe is that there was far too much nude as in colour rather than exposed body parts which although deeply fashionable can look drab and boring.

The Golden Globes are a replica hermes canvas tote dress rehearsal for the Oscars, so let's hope we lose the beige, nun like shrouds and see a return to high octane glamour.
